This Fellowship addressed the significant issue of leadership. Its primary focus was researching and developing leadership skills in undergraduate students. The Fellowship was designed to develop and trial a leadership program specifically to enhance the competencies and skills of undergraduate students beyond their discipline knowledge. A group of universities across Australia agreed to participate in a pilot program to respond to the following identified issues.

• The area of leadership development in undergraduates has been under-researched and under-debated in recent work about graduate attributes, generic skills, and work integrated learning.

This project used the voices of diverse cohorts of students to describe their learning journeys as they progressed through the later years of their degree and into the workforce. The project combined quantitative data from a large student sample with qualitative data from a series of case study narratives to document the students’ perceptions about their learning experiences, the factors underpinning progression in their studies and their transition into the workplace. This paper reports an Australian investigation into concerns about student writing at University level and the construction of an objective measure of literacy. The English Skills Assessment (ESA) test, involving multiple choice items, and an essay, marked according to specified criteria, was administered to newly enrolled students (N = 495) in a University's Education programme. Analyses reveal inconsistencies between subtests of the ESA test, but the written test shows more promise. While some association is observed between the two measures, comparable subtests (such as spelling, punctuation, sentence structure) do not appear to be measuring the same thing.

A survey of the 49 youth work students who graduated from the Edith Cowan University in the years 1986 to 1988 was undertaken. Information was sought on the occupational destinations of graduates including the time taken to obtain a first appointment, impediments experienced' in attempting to gain a position, and perceived barriers to future career prospects. The study found that most graduates were able to obtain employment in the youth affairs field. On the 9th June 1990, the Claremont Teachers College Alumni Association completed its first 10 years. From a fairly humble beginning the Association has continued to grow until it now has in excess of 250 members.

These first ten years have been most traumatic for the Claremont College. In 1982 the College lost its identity as a separate autonomous institution when it was amalgamated to become one of the campuses of the West Australian College of Advanced Education. PLANNING

1.1 restructuring of the bodies co-ordinating tertiary education

1.2 co-ordinated development of overlapping areas of technical, further and tertiary education

1.3 community college and open-learning operation of tertiary institutions for greater benefit of local communities

1.4 accountability of institutions of advanced education in terms of vocational supply and demand and community benefit proportional to public funds invested in such institutions.
