A study of what culture is; how it influences the choices we make; how to deal positively with conflicts that inevitably arise in working/living situations with people of diverse cultures. It is a course structured to raise multicultural awareness and fortify students' social skills in dealing with cultural differences. It includes an ethnographic study of cultural groups in the U.S.A. University education in the United States has become an increasingly global environment. In the classrooms of a modern university students and teachers from literally all corners of the world come together and reshape the face of higher education. Without a doubt the multicultural classroom of the 21st century necessitates fresh pedagogical approaches to university instruction that questions both established student and teacher models. Non-traditional, first generation, college students are changing the face of higher education in the United States. More than one third of today's students are minorities, eighty percent of those are employed and attending school part-time and more than one quarter are single parents. Diversity at LaGuardia means many things besides culture, ethnicity or nationality.It also refers to age, social background, fluency in English, academic expectations, learning styles and academic preparation. We argue here that we need to rethink curriculum in relation to this new understanding of diversity.
