This course is designed to introduce students to the methods of teaching world history to urban middle and high school students. This course will help prepare candidates to become effective social studies educators capable of teaching students the content knowledge, the intellectual skills, and the civic values necessary for fulfilling the responsibilities of citizenship in a participatory democracy. Special attention is given to effective teaching strategies and to addressing the individual and cultural diversity of all learners. We will examine methods for teaching world history and developing curriculum in an urban classroom.

EDS 705: Focusing on the selection, adaptation, design, modification, and evaluation of curriculum and instruction for culturally and linguistically diverse young children with special needs. The development of appropriate IFSP and IEP goals, instructional objectives, and lesson plans in relation to the child's levels of functioning and cultural and linguistic background. Also addressing the selection of instructional materials and technologies; individualization and group service delivery; collaborative teaching; training of parents as reinforcers of acquired skills; adaptive and social skill acquisition; and the evaluation of students and programs. Course requires submission of a videotaped lesson for evaluation.

This course is an introduction to the social, historical, and philosophical foundations of early childhood education in the United States. Through critical analysis of required reading, class discussion, and writing, we will explore how the dynamics of schooling relate to larger social, cultural, economic, political and historical forces. This class introduces students to unconventional photographic processes. Students will explore historic methods and materials that allow the extension of photographic imagery beyond the standard black and white or color print. The class will experiment with handmade emulsions and papers, incorporating photographic imagery into new and varied contexts such as drawings, paintings, and made books.
