School Libraries In South Australia 2019 Census, Katherine Dix, Rachel Felgate, Syeda Kashfee Ahmed, Toby Carslake, Shani Sniedze

School and system improvement

This report presents the results of a survey census and website review of school libraries, taken across all South Australian schools in Term 3, 2019. The census collected data on school library staffing, facilities, funding, and support. Results reveal that schools with a qualified teacher librarian are more likely to have improved student literacy outcomes. While 94 per cent of South Australian schools have someone to manage the library collection and to select resources, less than a quarter (23 per cent) are managed by a qualified teacher librarian. Questions about the nature of library provision in schools uncovered eight main …

Measuring The Value Of Professional Indexing, Philip Hider, Pru Mitchell, Robert Parkes Sep 2019

Measuring The Value Of Professional Indexing, Philip Hider, Pru Mitchell, Robert Parkes

Information Management

This study provides both a quantitative estimate and qualitative analysis of the additional ‘retrieval power’ that professionally assigned subject indexing affords users of a typical database in the field of education. A full version of Informit’s A+ Education database and one stripped of its subject indexing were searched by four research assistants tasked with compiling exhaustive bibliographies on forty-eight topics. The searchers were then surveyed about their use of the two databases, while their bibliographies and search logs were also examined. A two-way ANOVA model was constructed to estimate the percentage of additional resources found by the searchers on the …

Developing An Effective, Accessible And Sustainable Digital Repository Of Olt Learning And Teaching Resources: Final Report, Philip Hider, Pru Mitchell, Helen Galatis, Katie Mcdowell

Information Management

This project aimed to provide the Department with a roadmap for its Resource Library, an online repository containing resources emanating from the projects funded by the OLT and its predecessors. The roadmap is to address both technical and management considerations in order to ensure the repository’s sustainability and engagement with the higher education learning and teaching community in Australia and beyond. The project conducted a literature review and prepared a briefing paper for participants in a nationwide consultation exercise around the future of the Resource Library. Over 70 leaders and experts in university learning and teaching, and in scholarly repositories, …

Information Management

The Australian Office for Learning and Teaching's (OLT) research repository is used to disseminate the results of higher education research. This is the final report of a project that investigated how the resources in the research repository should be described and indexed so that they could be accessed more effectively. The project team ascertained which attributes of the resources needed to be described and how they should be described, developed a metadata schema, selected and/or created appropriate indexing vocabularies and reindexed the resources.

International Computer And Information Literacy Study 2013: Australian Students’ Readiness For Study, Work And Life In The Digital Age, Lisa De Bortoli, Sarah Buckley, Catherine Underwood, Elizabeth O'Grady, Eveline Gebhardt

ICT - Digital Literacy

The International Computer and Information Literacy Study (ICILS) is the first international comparative study that examines students’ acquisition of computer and information literacy (CIL): ‘the ability to use computers to investigate, create and communicate in order to participate effectively at home, at school, in the workplace and in society’ (Fraillon, Schulz, & Ainley, 2013, p. 17). Information and communication technologies (ICT) are an essential part of 21st-century society. As a result, it has become increasingly important for citizens to understand and be able to use ICT in order to effectively participate in life in the digital age. Although students use …

Auditing The Office For Learning And Teaching Resource Library, Philip Hider, Barney Dalgarno, Sue Bennett, Ying-Hsang Liu, Carole Gerts, Carla Daws, Barbara Spiller, Robert Parkes, Pat Knight, Raylee Macaulay, Lauren Carlson

Information Management

The Australian government Office for Learning and Teaching’s (OLT) Resource Library was a key means of disseminating the outcomes from projects funded by itself and its predecessor organisations, the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) and the Carrick Institute. In order to apply the recommendations and resources emanating from these projects, it is vital that educators and other stakeholders are aware of, and effectively able to use, the Resource Library. Based on anecdotal evidence indicating a lack of awareness of the Resource Library and problems with consistently being able to search for and retrieve relevant resources from the database, the …

Impact Of School Libraries On Student Achievement: A Review Of The Research, Michele Lonsdale

School and system improvement

This literature review was undertaken on behalf of the Australian School Library Association (ASLA). It was conducted over a four-week period in November–December 2002. The main purpose of the review was to report on the nature and extent of the evidence that has linked school libraries to student achievement from 1990 - 2002, to identify the strengths and gaps in existing data as it might relate to an Australian setting, and to suggest some strategies for developing further research in Australia.

Report On Reorganisation Of The Library, Harold Leslie White May 1945

Report On Reorganisation Of The Library, Harold Leslie White

Information Management

Since the A.C.E.R. was established in 1930 the library has steadily developed in order to meet certain obvious needs but without any attempt at exact definition of policy. The increased the Library and the desirability of providing the most efficient service possible have led to the appointment of a trained librarian and to more careful consideration of the functions which the library should perform and the methods it should adopt. The Council is greatly indebted to the National Library at Canberra for making available for about two days the services of Mr. H. L. White, an authority on special libraries. …

Libraries In Secondary Schools: A Report On The Libraries Of Secondary Schools In Victoria, With Suggestions For A Post-War Plan For School Libraries Prepared For The Australian Institute Of Librarians (Victorian Branch), Frank G. Kirby

Information Management

In order to ascertain the present position with regard to library provision in Victorian secondary education, questionnaires were sent to 91 schools, 50 government and 41 private. Answers were received from 51. No replies were received from 37 schools, while 3 schools explained that circumstances prevented them at that time from complying with our request. Although it is to be regretted that 37 schools failed to return replies, we may reasonably assume that this negative result indicates that most of these schools either have no library, or that the library is so small that it was not considered worth while …
