Sixty-six students from the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University were invited into the Theta of Minnesota Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa at CSB and SJU. The students were inducted into the chapter during a ceremony at 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, at Alumnae Hall, CSB; this event was followed by an invitation-only gala banquet for Phi Beta Kappa members and their guests in room 204, Gorecki Center, CSB.
SJU junior Alex Seefeldt performed an original piano composition during the processional. CSB/SJU Provost Richard Ice gave welcoming remarks, and Laura Taylor, assistant professor of theology at CSB and …

Students’ Attachment Styles To Their Professors: Patterns Of Achievement, Curiosity, Exploration, Self-Criticism, Self-Reassurance, And Autonomy, Lian H. Conrad
All College Thesis Program, 2016-2019
This study explored whether professors for young adult college students could serve as caring and trustworthy attachment figures who fostered certain mindsets, perceptions of the self, and academic behaviors. A convenience sample of 89 first-year college students in introductory psychology courses completed an online survey. First, the study sought to replicate the established relationships between students’ achievement goal orientations and curiosity, exploration, self-criticism, and self-reassurance. Then, the study analyzed students’ attachment styles to their First-Year Seminar (FYS) professors in relation to achievement goal orientations to see if attachment style could then predict similar patterns of academic behaviors. Contrary to expectations, …

Forum Lectures
This presentation explores different opportunities outside of the classroom setting that enhance the learning and practice of a second language (L2), as well as the intercultural competency of learners of L2. The use of academic technology available at CSBSJU and of interactive online platforms allow for students to practice their language skills with native speakers from around the globe, respond to aural and written cues, discuss readings, view films, and take tests and quizzes outside of the classroom. As a consequence, instructors can delve into more nuanced language and cultural topics as language proficiency is achieved. We address strategies currently …

College Of Saint Benedict/Saint John’S University Hlc Quality Initiative Summary Report, Kathryn A. E. Enke, Shane Miller
Academic Affairs Publications
This Quality Initiative (QI) sought to identify more systematically how the College of Saint Benedict (CSB) and Saint John’s University (SJU) structures, programming, curriculum, and environments promote or inhibit healthy gender development among CSB and SJU students. CSB, a Catholic Benedictine residential liberal arts college for women, and SJU, a Catholic Benedictine residential liberal arts college for men, share a common academic program, while maintaining separate residential life and student development offices. Gender is a central component of our missions. As single-sex institutions working in partnership with each other, we have a unique obligation and opportunity to focus on gender …

Considering that as recently as 2014, school girls Chibok, Nigeria were abducted by Boko Haram, a Muslim fundamentalist terrorist group, one has to wonder about the correlation between the access to education, equality, safety, and opportunity. The College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University are private Catholic liberal arts institutions whose students enroll in single-sex institutions, but are provided co-educational learning experiences in the classroom. This hybrid structure permits the exploration multiple aspects of a gendered education. Given the opportunity this structure offers, the researchers of this project aim to study the First Year Seminar (FYS) experiences of student …

Transgender Policy And Practice Development For The College Of Saint Benedict And Saint John’S University, Mary Geller, Doug Mullin Osb
Academic Affairs Publications
The CSB and SJU Vice Presidents for Student Development led the effort to research and develop policies and practices that would guide the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University to be intentional with regard to the welcome, education, and services extended to transgender and gender non-conforming students in ways that are consistent with each of their respective institutional identities and missions as a Catholic Benedictine residential liberal arts college for women/men.
Exploring Men’S Motivations For Studying, And Not Studying, Abroad, Shane Miller
Exploring Men’S Motivations For Studying, And Not Studying, Abroad, Shane Miller
Academic Affairs Publications
A long-standing trend in collegiate study abroad experiences has been the continual underrepresentation of key student demographics. One of the most persistent of these disparities has been the lack of men studying abroad. Between the 1996 and 2007 academic years, men’s participation rate in study abroad experiences consistently hovered at 35%. Female students, in other words, participated in study abroad at a rate nearly twice that of their male peers.
This research project was designed around two hypotheses – that ethnocentrism influenced men’s decisions to study abroad; and that racial or ethnic prejudice influenced men’s decisions to study abroad. In …

The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University are working with the Foundations of Excellence (FoE) of the John N. Gardner Institute for Excellence in Undergraduate Education (JNGI) to develop a comprehensive First-Year Experience (FYX) as part of the SD2020 Liberal Arts for Life goal of meeting “the needs and aspirations and exceed the expectations of a 21st century student body.” The FYX is not merely a program or set of programs, but an environment that encompasses all the students’ experiences and relationships with the institutions from the time of their deposit until they return for their sophomore year. …
