Stop The Century--We’Re Not Ready!, Leon Lederman

IMSA Great Minds Program ®

The distinguished Nobel Laureate and contributing author of the newly released Science Literacy for the Twenty-first Century and author of The God Particle will explore how science and technology serve as the drivers for 21st Century changes in our social, political and economic lives. Profits and conveniences made by deployment of new knowledge force the issue of whether such deployment is in society’s best long-term interest. The need grows exponentially for the voting public in our democratic society to play a significant role in making decisions. Lederman discusses whether we can devise a feasible educational system that will produce high …

Long-Step Homogeneous Interior-Point Method For P*-Nonlinear Complementarity Problem, Goran Lesaja Oct 2002

Long-Step Homogeneous Interior-Point Method For P*-Nonlinear Complementarity Problem, Goran Lesaja

Department of Mathematical Sciences Faculty Publications

A P*-Nonlinear Complementarity Problem as a generalization of the P*Linear Complementarity Problem is considered. We show that the long-step version of the homogeneous self-dual interior-point algorithm could be used to solve such a problem. The algorithm achieves linear global convergence and quadratic local convergence under the following assumptions: the function satisfies a modified scaled Lipschitz condition, the problem has a strictly complementary solution, and certain submatrix of the Jacobian is nonsingular on some compact set.

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As the World Wide Web evolves into an immense information network, it is tempting to build new digital library services and expand existing digital library services to make use of web content. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of G-Portal, a web portal that aims to provide digital library services over geospatial and georeferenced content found on the World Wide Web. G-Portal adopts a map-based user interface to visualize and manipulate the distributed geospatial and georeferenced content. Annotation capabilities are supported, allowing users to contribute geospatial and georeferenced objects as well as their associated metadata. The other …

Creating Successful Calculus Writing Assignments, Kris H. Green Jun 2002

Creating Successful Calculus Writing Assignments, Kris H. Green

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Faculty/Staff Publications

I discuss three different writing assignments that I have used in my calculus courses. These assignments are introduced with a discussion of purpose and audience. Defining these qualities of an assignment will ensure that your writing assignments are more successful. The assignments discussed and explored here represent three different purposes: personal, informational and a blend of the two. The audiences for these assignments are diverse and force the students to incorporate particular modes of writing that demonstrate much of their thinking. Assessment of student learning as a result of these assignments is discussed. A fourth writing assignment is developed from …

A Note On Computing The Generalized Inverse A^(2)_{T,S} Of A Matrix A, Xiezhang Li, Yimin Wei Jan 2002

A Note On Computing The Generalized Inverse A^(2)_{T,S} Of A Matrix A, Xiezhang Li, Yimin Wei

Department of Mathematical Sciences Faculty Publications

The generalized inverse A T,S (2) of a matrix A is a {2}-inverse of A with the prescribed range T and null space S. A representation for the generalized inverse A T,S (2) has been recently developed with the condition σ (GA| T)⊂(0,∞), where G is a matrix with R(G)=T andN(G)=S. In this note, we remove the above condition. Three types of iterative methods for A T,S (2) are presented if σ(GA|T) is a subset of the open right half-plane and they are extensions of existing computational procedures of A T,S (2), including special cases such as the weighted Moore-Penrose …

On Inequalities And Partial Orderings For Weighted Reliability Measures, Broderick O. Oluyede

Department of Mathematical Sciences Faculty Publications

Inequalities, relations and partial ordering for weighted reliability measures are presented. Inequalities for Lévy distance measure for weighted distributions are obtained in terms of the parent distributions. Reliability inequalities and stability results are established for weighted distributions with monotone hazard and mean residual life functions.

From Computational Science To Internetics: Integration Of Science With Computer Science, Geoffrey C. Fox Jan 2002

From Computational Science To Internetics: Integration Of Science With Computer Science, Geoffrey C. Fox

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

We describe how our world dominated by Science and Scientists has been changed revolutionized by technologies moving with Internet time. Computers have always been well-used tools but in the beginning only the science counted and little credit or significance was attached to any computing activities associated with scientific research. Some 20 years ago, this started to change and the area of computational science gathered support with the NSF Supercomputer centers playing a critical role. However this vision has stalled over the last 5 years with information technology increasing in importance. The Holy Grail of computational science-- scalable parallel computing-- is …

A Proposed Undergraduate Bioinformatics Curriculum For Computer Scientists, Travis E. Doom, Michael L. Raymer, Dan E. Krane, Oscar Garcia Jan 2002

A Proposed Undergraduate Bioinformatics Curriculum For Computer Scientists, Travis E. Doom, Michael L. Raymer, Dan E. Krane, Oscar Garcia

Kno.e.sis Publications

Bioinformatics is a new and rapidly evolving discipline that has emerged from the fields of experimental molecular biology and biochemistry, and from the the artificial intelligence, database, and algorithms disciplines of computer science. Largely because of the inherently interdisciplinary nature of bioinformatics research, academia has been slow to respond to strong industry and government demands for trained scientists to develop and apply novel bioinformatics techniques to the rapidly-growing, freely-available repositories of genetic and proteomic data. While some institutions are responding to this demand by establishing graduate programs in bioinformatics, the entrance barriers for these programs are high, largely due to …

Evaluating Java Applets For Teaching On The Internet, Michael R. Healy '04, Dale E. Berger, Victoria L. Romero '07, Christopher L. Aberson '99, Amanda Saw '11

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

The Web Interface for Statistics Education (http://wise.cgu.edu) is a website built around interactive tutorials designed to teach introductory and advanced statistical concepts. The tutorials use Java applets that dynamically illustrate the statistical concepts being taught. By using Java applets, we teach statistics in a manner not possible in a traditional classroom environment. In this paper, we provide examples of the applets, illustrate how students use them, and we report the outcome of a study that examined tutorial effectiveness as a learning tool.

An Interactive Tutorial For Teaching Statistical Power, Christopher L. Aberson '99, Dale E. Berger, Michael R. Healy '04, Victoria L. Romero '07

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

This paper describes an interactive Web-based tutorial that supplements instruction on statistical power. This freely available tutorial provides several interactive exercises that guide students as they draw multiple samples from various populations and compare results for populations with differing parameters (for example, small standard deviation versus large standard deviation). The tutorial assignment includes diagnostic multiple-choice questions with feedback addressing misconceptions, and follow-up questions suitable for grading. The sampling exercises utilize an interactive Java applet that graphically demonstrates relationships between statistical power and effect size, null and alternative populations and sampling distributions, and Type I and II error rates. The applet …

Creating A User Friendly Website For The Boys & Girls Clubs Of Black Hawk County, Kimberly M. Carter

Graduate Research Papers

Website design can be overwhelming for many viewers. Many times viewers discontinue using sites, because it.is not easy to navigate through the site. In creating the website for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Black Hawk County, user-friendliness was the focal point of the project. The Chief Professional Officer along with the staff at the Boys & Girls Clubs assisted with the development of a website by providing information that was to be included on the site. To ensure a professional look the designer relied on the four basic principles of design: contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity. The design simplicity …
