Summerstart Advisors: Credit Load Assessment, Western Washington University. Office Of Survey Research

Office of Institutional Effectiveness

In Spring 2008 The Office of Survey Research informed former Summerstart Advisors that we had conducted focus groups with freshmen during Winter Quarter to find out why students are not registering for full course loads during their first quarter and first year at Western. As a part of this project, we sent Summerstart advisors a questionnaire which asked them to comment on students’ comments and to provide a context for understanding why not all students take a full 15 credit load in their first quarter. We asked advisors to provide detailed comments about why they think students perceive the process …

The First-Year Experience (Fye) Program Report: Course Offerings In Fall, 2006, Patricia M. Fabiano, Gary (Gary Russell) Mckinney, Chris Stark

Office of Institutional Effectiveness

1) The FYE seminars are stand-alone seminars, not linked to a GUR course as are the FIGs.

2) While the FIGs are taught by faculty and qualified staff, the FYE seminars are taught only be full-time faculty.

3) FYE seminars are offered in the fall, winter, and spring quarters, whereas the FIGs are available only in the fall of each year.

4) The FYE program does not have a mission statement that brings together a unified purpose for all the FYE seminars. Rather, each seminar is more closely aligned with disciplinary and / or departmental goals.

Analysis Of Student Demand For Courses At Western Fall Quarter, 2001, Carl Simpson, Sharon Schmidtz Jan 2002

Analysis Of Student Demand For Courses At Western Fall Quarter, 2001, Carl Simpson, Sharon Schmidtz

Office of Institutional Effectiveness

Each time a student attempts to register for any Western course. a computer record is created, including the student ID, the course sought, and the outcome of the attempt. Using those records, we can generate estimates of the demand for each course at Western. This report presents findings for fall quarter, 2001. We plan parallel reports for winter and spring quarters-hopefully early enough to be used by departments considering course offerings for 2002-2003. The major limitation of the data presented here is that students use Classfinder to identify courses that are already filled vs. open. That means some demand for …

Western has an access problem. While more students than ever want to come to Western, more students than ever are having to be turned away. There simply isn't the space. Fueled by the University's continued emphasis on academic excellence, regular placement among regional "best" in national publications, and the population influx known as the baby boom echo, Western has been inundated with the state's college-bound population. The Washington State Legislature, the Higher Education Coordinating Board, the Office of Financial Management-these bodies plus average citizens are hopeful that Western can address the access issue and let more students in. One solution …

Student Demand For An Expanded Summer Session, Carl Simpson, Linda D. (Linda Darlene) Clark, Gary (Gary Russell) Mckinney, Joseph E. Trimble

Office of Institutional Effectiveness

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: During Winter quarter, 1996, students responded to a questionnaire concerning the expansion of Western's Summer Session to "year-round operation." They were asked how likely they were to attend Summer Session in 1996, and then how likely they would have been to attend if Western had an expanded Summer Session in place for 1996. Survey findings indicated that expanding to year-round operation would significantly increase the size of enrollments during the Summer, though Summer would remain substantially smaller than during the academic year. The increase in student demand was estimated at 1315 students, a 51% increase in Summer Session …

During fall quarter, 1994, the Office of Survey Research conducted a telephone survey of in-coming freshmen and new transfers. A total of 322 freshmen and 270 new transfers participated. Among the survey's items, students were asked to describe the courses in which they were registered, as well as their use of and satisfaction with academic advising for their major, their transition to Western, and their living and studying arrangements. The topic of this issue of Focus is where students live and study, and their levels of satisfaction with those living and studying conditions.
