Brother Richard Kestler, FSC. was born John Kestler on January 8, 1942 to John and Alice Kestler. He grew up in the Oxford Circle section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Brother Richard attended elementary school at his parish of St. Martin of Tours and went on to La Salle College High School, graduating in 1960. By this time, he made the decision to join the Christian Brothers and began this process for about a year before attending La Salle College. “That’S Why I Say Stay In School”: Black Mothers’ Parental Involvement, Cultural Wealth, And Exclusion In Their Son’S Schooling, Quaylan Allen, Kimberly A. White-Smith

This study examines parental involvement practices, the cultural wealth, and school experiences of poor and working-class mothers of Black boys. Drawing upon data from an ethnographic study, we examine qualitative interviews with four Black mothers. Using critical race theory and cultural wealth frameworks, we explore the mothers’ approaches to supporting their sons’ education. We also describe how the mothers and their sons experienced exclusion from the school, and how this exclusion limited the mothers’ involvement. We highlight their agency in making use of particular forms of cultural wealth in responding to the school’s failure of their sons.

Introduction: Bystander-based programs have shown promise to reduce interpersonal violence at colleges, yet limited rigorous evaluations have addressed bystander intervention effectiveness in high schools. This study evaluated the Green Dot bystander intervention to reduce sexual violence and related forms of interpersonal violence in 26 high schools over 5 years.

Design: A cluster RCT was conducted.

Setting/participants: Kentucky high schools were randomized to intervention or control (wait list) conditions.

Intervention: Green Dot−trained educators conducted schoolwide presentations and recruited student popular opinion leaders to receive bystander training in intervention schools beginning in Year 1.

Each year 5-7 middle school and high school groups from underserved communities across Massachusetts are treated to a 4-5 day all expense paid trip to Nantucket to stay at the UMass Boston Nantucket Field Station and spend the week exploring the island and nature. MCAS standards are incorporated into this award winning program as students engage in hands-on, placed based experiential learning and document their journey through poetry, journaling, and photography.

The Talented And Gifted (TAG) Latino Program has served the academic, personal and social needs of Boston Public Schools middle and high schools Latino students and English Language Learners since 1985. TAG offers holistic, year-round support to approximately 600 students annually. Boston Public School (BPS) Latino students and English Language Learners (ELL) excel academically, socially and personally, so as to improve their ability to succeed in high school and at the postsecondary level.

In California, where this study takes place, it is estimated that 85,000 students drop out of high school annually. Consequences are often linked to economic and social issues including long term economic costs to the state and the likelihood of lesser participation in voting and civic engagement (Rumberger, 2012). This account documents one high school’s alternative intervention program that includes online academic credit recovery and socio-emotional guidance leading to graduation for Latino students who are at risk of dropping out. This paper summarizes the Wisconsin research that led to educational policy changes for the GED (General Education Development) high school equivalency credential and tracks the attempted reform of the GED credential in the 1980s, development of alternative instructional programs in the 1990s, and subsequent reestablishment of the GED in the state’s high schools. This history of the development and promotion of the GED credential examines how a multiple choice test came to be the primary vehicle for educating high school non-completers and why so few adult high school completion programs model the Carnegie unit high school. In 1984 the Employment and Training Institute embarked on a two-year study of the GED and its use in Wisconsin, at the request of State Superintendent Herbert J. Grover. The study explored the use of the GED credential by employers and post-secondary institutions in the state, the level of skills attained by GED holders, and the performance of GED holders in post-secondary education in the state. Some of the findings of the research were positive, some were negative. These youth employment competencies materials were developed for the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction by the Employment and Training Institute for juvenile offenders in the Wisconsin correctional facilities. The curriculum is in the same areas and format specified by the Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA) and focuses on basic skills and survival skills which have been identified as necessary to perform as effective adults. Educational Follow-Up Study Of Juveniles Released From Ethan Allen And Lincoln Hills (1982), Lois M. Quinn

This follow-up study examined the educational experiences of 759 youth released during 1979 from Ethan Allen and Lincoln Hills Schools, Wisconsin’s two state correctional institutions for juveniles. Ethan Allen and Lincoln Hills school records for each youth were reviewed as well as transcripts from schools attended before and after release. (105 public and 16 private schools provided student transcripts to the Department of Public Instruction.) In addition, forty-three parole officers were contacted for further information on youth whose school records were in question. The follow-up study identified only 24 youth (3.2% of the total population) who completed a traditional high …
