A Primer For Mathematical Modeling, Marla A. Sole
A Primer For Mathematical Modeling, Marla A. Sole
Publications and Research
With the implementation of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics recommendations and the adoption of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, modeling has moved to the forefront of K-12 education. Modeling activities not only reinforce purposeful problem-solving skills, they also connect the mathematics students learn in school with the mathematics they will use outside of school. Instructors have found mathematical modeling difficult to teach. To successfully incorporate modeling activities I believe that curricular changes should be accompanied by professional development for curriculum developers, classroom teachers, and higher education professionals. This article serves as an introduction to modeling by …
Horizon Content Knowledge In The Work Of Teaching: A Focus On Planning, Nick Wasserman, Julianna Connelly Stockton
Horizon Content Knowledge In The Work Of Teaching: A Focus On Planning, Nick Wasserman, Julianna Connelly Stockton
Mathematics Faculty Publications
Horizon content knowledge, one component of Ball et al.’s mathematical knowledge for teaching framework (e.g., Ball, Thames, & Phelps, 2008), has yet to reach adequate clarity and consensus in the field. Recently, various scholars have worked to further conceptualize and describe the mathematical horizon (e.g., Jakobsen, Thames & Ribeiro, 2013; Figueiras et al., 2011; Zazkis & Mamolo, 2011). In this communication, we identify some limitations in the ways such knowledge has thus far been described and offer an additional form of potential impact of horizon content knowledge on the work of teaching.
The Mathematics Portfolio: An Alternative Tool To Evaluate Students’ Progress, Marla A. Sole
The Mathematics Portfolio: An Alternative Tool To Evaluate Students’ Progress, Marla A. Sole
Publications and Research
This article describes the need for more thorough and varied forms of assessment to evaluate students’ level of understanding in mathematics. Portfolios are one type of assessment tool that, when added to a teacher’s repertoire can improve students’ comprehension and retention and enable students to monitor their own progress and to take more responsibility for their own learning. Portfolio assignments can also help students and teachers to detect and remedy weaknesses and misunderstandings and can increase students’ self-confidence in mathematics. This article discusses what a portfolio is, gives an example of a unit portfolio used in an undergraduate Finite Mathematics …
Mathematical Notation: Help Or Hindrance?, Geoff D. Tennant Dr
Mathematical Notation: Help Or Hindrance?, Geoff D. Tennant Dr
Institute for Educational Development, East Africa
This article puts forward a range of reasons for using mathematical notation, emphasizing the need to allow children learning it time and space to come to terms with it. Examples are given in furthering the argument that the time to introduce notation is after the concept is already fully understood.
Prospective Teachers’ Ability To Pose Word Problems, Nusrat Fatima Rizvi
Prospective Teachers’ Ability To Pose Word Problems, Nusrat Fatima Rizvi
Institute for Educational Development, Karachi
The purpose of this study was to assess difference in prospective teachers’ ability to pose word problems for mathematical expressions involving division before and after an instruction intervention. After the initial assessment of participants’ ability to pose word problems for division expressions, the researcher introduced an alternative model i.e. rate or ratio to represent division involving whole numbers. After the intervention it was assessed whether the model helped the prospective teachers develop word problems for division of fractions. The findings revealed that the prospective teachers successfully posed word problems for division of whole numbers based on intuitive model of fair …
