Ouachita Baptist University student media have earned 82 awards for excellence, including seven national and 38 state awards for the Ouachitonian yearbook and 37 state awards for the Signal newspaper, Ouachita Sports Digital Network, online media, and television coverage.

The 2022 Ouachitonian was honored with a Pacemaker Award from the Associated Collegiate Press. Announced in March during the ACP National College Media Conference in San Francisco, the Pacemaker is one of the oldest nationwide awards for college journalism. Ouachita Baptist University’s student yearbook the Ouachitonian received a 2022 National Yearbook Program of Excellence award from Jostens Company.

Based in Minneapolis, Minn., Jostens produces college yearbooks nationwide, including the Ouachitonian. The company’s National Yearbook Program of Excellence recognizes engaging yearbooks that reflect a broad representation of the student body. Gold-, silver- or bronze-level distinction is awarded to publications based on criteria achieved in one to three of the following categories: creating an inclusive yearbook, generating school engagement and successfully managing the yearbook creation process.

Ouachita Baptist University’s student publications recently won 53 awards at the Arkansas College Media Association (AMCA) conference in Bentonville, Ark.

“It’s nice to see so many students honored for their work because it shows that it is a team effort when producing the publications for the university,” said Dr. Deborah Root, chair of Ouachita’s Rogers Department of Communications and sponsor of the Ouachitonian yearbook. “From writing to design to photography, it takes a strong staff of students to publish award-winning publications.”

Ouachita Baptist University’s 2016 Ouachitonian yearbook earned an All-American ranking from the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) for the second consecutive year. The Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) also recognized the 2016 Ouachitonian as a Gold Medalist in its College Yearbook Critique. Ouachita Baptist University’s Ouachitonian yearbook was recognized by the Arkansas College Media Association (ACMA) as the top yearbook in the state with the first place award in General Excellence for yearbooks. The publication was recognized at ACMA’s recent annual convention, hosted this year by the University of Central Arkansas in Conway. The Ouachitonian and Ouachita’s student newspaper, The Signal, earned a total of 40 group and individual awards.

ACMA is an organization of collegiate newspaper, yearbook, online, magazine and television staffs from across the state. All Arkansas university publications compete in the awards regardless of the university’s size.
