One look at the credentials of the 1986-87 Maine hockey team gives you the impression that this is a program on the rise. Only a handful of NCAA teams can boast having 10 NHL draft picks on their roster, seven of which have been selected in the last two drafts.

The nucleus of the 1986-87 Black Bears is made up of underclassmen, as 19 players on the 28-man roster have yet to reach their junior year. "We are in the situation now where our predominant classes will be the freshmen and sophomores," says head coach Shawn Walsh.
