Learning Styles Of Students And Instructors: An Analysis Of Course Performance And Satisfaction, Marshall A. Geiger, Edmund J. Boyle
Learning Styles Of Students And Instructors: An Analysis Of Course Performance And Satisfaction, Marshall A. Geiger, Edmund J. Boyle
Accounting Faculty Publications
Accounting educators have utilized Kolb's Learning Style Inventory (LSI) in the assessment of accounting students and the accounting curriculum. This study extends these earlier works by examining the effect of student and instructor learning style, as measured by the revised 1985 LSI, on introductory course performance and ratings of satisfaction with both the course and the instructor.
The results indicate no significant effect of student/teacher learning style interaction on final course grade or students' ratings of satisfaction. However, instructors having a convergent learning style were given significantly higher satisfaction ratings regardless of student learning style.

Chose Not To Enroll: Survey Results Of Nonenrolled Students Admitted To Western Washington University, Debra A. Wharton, Gary (Gary Russell) Mckinney, Jacqueline M. Andrieu-Parker, Joseph E. Trimble
Office of Institutional Effectiveness
Executive Summary: This report analyzes survey results from a questionnaire sent to a sample of 2,000 Fall Quarter, 1991, non-enrolled students who were accepted for admission to WWU but declined to attend. Both general survey results and written results are reported. The sample was made up mostly of single, Caucasian females aged 21 and under who had permanent residency in Washington State. Over three-quarters of respondents had been enrolled in a college prep program, and had a 3.00 or higher overall high school GPA. Two-thirds of the respondents were employed, with half working more than 21 hours a week. The …

Office of Institutional Effectiveness
The following report provides a tabular summary of student responses to the Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) survey for Western Washington University's 1991 in-coming freshmen class. The CIRP was developed in 1966 by the American Council on Education (ACE) and the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Los Angeles. The CIRP survey is used nationwide to gather normative data on the characteristics of first-time freshmen at American universities and colleges. In order to keep current with the changing interests and concerns of the academic community, the survey items are updated annually. In the 25 years of its …

This report examines the undergraduate student experience at WWU. Special attention will be paid to comparing this experience by gender, using such shared aspects of university life as academic experiences, student services, social life, extracurricular activities, etc. The report consists of summaries of responses given by 488 subjects from a sample of 800 randomly selected undergraduate students during Spring Quarter, 1991. The return rate was 61%, with the final sample representing 5.5% of the total undergraduate headcount for that quarter. Respondents were 57% female, and 43% male in an overall WWU student population that was 55.5% female, and 44.5% male. …

Office of Institutional Effectiveness
This report was designed to provide information that may help colleges and departments with internal planning and periodic reviews. Where possible, data was combined from two sources: a survey of the class of 1989, and a survey of 1987 seniors, nearly all of whom graduated in 1987 and 1988. By combining the two sets, the resulting sample was large enough to provide meaningful feedback to all but the smallest departments. The findings attached as part of this report have not been analyzed or interpreted. Tables and graphs displaying the appropriate data were generated, but no analysis was done nor conclusions …

English Proficiency & Academic Performance Of International Students At A Small Baptist University, Danny Hinson
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The predictive reliability of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) as a predictor of academic success of international students at Belmont University, a small Baptist university, was examined. Data were collected and examined on 168 international students. They were profiled by gender, language background, Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score, grade point average achieved, and major area of study.
No significant correlation was found between TOEFL scores and academic achievement as measured by CPA. However, significant correlation was found between major field of study, TOEFL ranges, and gender in relationship to academic success.

Learning Styles Of Introductory Accounting Students: An Extension To Course Performance And Satisfaction, Marshall A. Geiger
Learning Styles Of Introductory Accounting Students: An Extension To Course Performance And Satisfaction, Marshall A. Geiger
Accounting Faculty Publications
Togo and Baldwin (1990) have recently utilized Kolb's 1976 Learning Style Inventory (LSI) in the assessment of introductory accounting student performance. This study extends this earlier work by examining the effect of learning style, as measured by the 1985 LSI, on introductory exam performance and ratings of satisfaction with the introductory course. Learning style was found to be significantly related to overall exam performance; with those maintaining a similar learning style as the instructor (i.e. assimilator) performing best. Additionally, learning style was also found to affect student ratings of course satisfaction.
The Research Critique Approach To Educating Sociology Students, Rachel I. Filinson, Darek Niklas
The Research Critique Approach To Educating Sociology Students, Rachel I. Filinson, Darek Niklas
Faculty Publications
In recent years, instructors of methods courses have made a repeated plea in pedagogical journals for teaching students research techniques through "doing" or simulating a real project (Ballard 1987; Cutler 1987; Irish 1987; Ransford and Butler 1982; Stoddart 1987; Takata and Leiting 1987; Weiss 1987). Approaches are varied; they include individual, group, or class research projects that generate data for class-specific projects, collect data for external consumption, or use existing data. It is argued that the disembodied knowledge of scientific inquiry presented in the classroom must be supplemented concurrently by an exposure to the actual process of research. Only by …

the June graduating class for the years 1990 and 1991. These reports led to the production of the present report, which looks back over WWU's June graduates from the years 1981 through 1991. Information for this report was obtained from the Registrar's Office, through the Student Tracking System, maintained by the Registrar's Office and supplemented by the OIAT. Data was analyzed using fundamental descriptive statistics. Unlike the OIAT reports on graduates in 1990 and 1991, this report mainly consists of an array of tables. Interpretation of the tabular data is left to the discretion of the reader. A good deal …

An Analysis Of The Effects Of A Readjustment Of The Math Placement Test Cutoff Scores, Gary (Gary Russell) Mckinney, Jacqueline M. Andrieu-Parker, Joseph E. Trimble
Office of Institutional Effectiveness
Introduction In May, 1991, the Office of Institutional Assessment and Testing (OIAT) published a report that summarized analyses conducted to explore the relationship of the three levels of the Math Placement Test (MPT)--Basic Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, and Pre-Calculus-¬ with mathematics course selection and final mathematics course grade. Based on the MPT score, the probability of receiving a passing grade (C- or better) was computed for the majority of mathematics courses that a student may enroll in immediately after taking the MPT. Partly as a result of that report, in the fall, 1991, cut-off scores for admittance to certain mathematics courses …

The Characteristics Of Faculty In Comprehensive Institutions, Ted I.K. Youn
The Characteristics Of Faculty In Comprehensive Institutions, Ted I.K. Youn
New England Resource Center for Higher Education Publications
This paper compares the characteristics of faculty in comprehensive institutions with those of faculty in other college and university categories as identified by the Carnegie Foundation. Its 1987 Carnegie Classification groups institutions on the basis of level of degree offered—per-baccalaureate to doctorate—and the comprehensiveness of their mission. Public and private institutions are included in each category.
This paper will summarize demographic features, working conditions, satisfaction and participation in academic work organizations, mobility and careers, and attitudes and orientations toward the profession and its organization.
