The Spring 2014 Follow-Up Survey of Freshmen Who Entered Western in 2012 (2nd Year Survey) is part of a longitudinal effort to survey students with a goal to improve educational programs and provide self -assessment data. Together with the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, the Office of Survey Research (OSR) designed this survey in an attempt to shed light on the efficacy and satisfaction with first year and GUR programs. The WELS Baseline Survey of Transfers Entering Western in the Fall, 2013 (Transfer Survey) is the companion survey to the Office of Survey Research’s (OSR) survey of incoming freshmen. The Exit Survey of Undergraduate Students Completing Degrees in summer, 2012 through spring of 2013 (Exit Survey) is the fifth survey of graduating students conducted at Western Washington University. This survey is designed to illuminate departmental-, college-, and university-level information on student satisfaction, barriers to success, experiences in upper division courses, and post-graduation plans. The exit survey also includes questions submitted to the Office of Survey Research (OSR) by the Division of Enrollment and Student Services, Western Libraries, the Equal Opportunity Office, University Residences, the Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education, and a group of questions addressing online courses. Executive Summary: Every other year the Office of Survey Research (OSR) contacts recently graduated Western students to inquire into their current activities and ask for their retrospective thoughts on their Western experience. In the spring of 2012 we surveyed alumni who completed their undergraduate degrees between summer, 2010 and spring, 2011. This report details the questions asked on that survey and summarizes responses for the university and by college and department. Initially, OSR solicited responses using e-mail contacts. These were initiated in July, 2012. Nonrespondents received two additional requests and then OSR contacted non-respondents by telephone to request their participation. …

The baseline survey of transfers is an annual survey of all transfer students entering Western in the Fall. This survey is fully explained and documented in “WELS Baseline Survey of Transfers Entering Western in the Fall, 2010” which may be found on the Office of Survey Research’s website (http://www.wwu.edu/socad/osr/). This addendum breaks down the data from that survey by college. Hopefully, this data will provide a finer degree of analysis allowing colleges greater lattitude in their self-evaluation efforts.

This report presents findings from the fall, 2008, baseline survey of entering transfers, a total of 973 students. There were 483 online responses and 297 phone responses, for an 81% response rate. Survey topics included transfers students’ previous education, attendance at Transitions (summer program for transfers), academic confidence, expectations as they enter Western, majors and minors, and personal backgrounds.

College credit from high school, a total of 2693 students. There were 1533 online responses and 608 phone responses, for an 80% response rate. By design, the 2008 WELS baseline survey of freshmen was shortened from previous year’s WELS baseline surveys. Survey topics included Summerstart and summer preparation for college, high school engagement, academic self-perception, and general college preparedness.

Of the 2386 students who began as freshmen in the fall of 2005, 1864 enrolled at Western in the spring, 2008. This cohort was invited to participate in this report’s survey. OSR received 919 responses, for a response rate of 49%. The survey was administered both online and via telephone. There were 763 online responses and 156 telephone responses. This report presents the frequencies from that survey administration.

Western’s first Alumni Survey was conducted in 1988; it’s development and administration was in response to the Higher Education Coordinating Board (HEC Board) requirement to survey graduates every biennially. Western was done so diligently and reliably since. Twenty years on, as academic concerns have changed, so has the survey; however, the original “fourteen common items” proscribed by the HEC Board have remained. Similarly, the administration of the survey adapted: from a paper-and-pencil only mail-out form to the current on-line and telephone method. The Western Educational Longitudinal Study (WELS) was conceived as a process to obtain data more relevant to Western and its mission than survey data had been able to obtain previously. Rather than continuing to rely on outside survey forms, researchers developed a Western-specific survey form. Development of this survey took about three years, with researchers soliciting input from dozens of individuals, departments and offices. Along the way, WELS researchers also noted where data was already being collected so that doubling up on survey questions was minimized. Preface to the WWU Student Survey Reports, Volumes One to Five The Surveys: During Summer, 1986, Western's Vice President for Academic Affairs requested that the Office of Survey Research, located in the Sociology Department, conduct three inter-related surveys: A five year follow-up of 632 1982 Western graduates. A five year follow-up of 364 Individuals who attended Western but left In 1982 without graduating and remained out of Western for at least one year.
