It would be an understatement to say the University of Maine is optimistic about the 1999-2000 women’s basketball season. The Black Bears are coming off one of their most successful seasons in the history of the program. They participated in the NCAA Tournament for the fifth straight season and defeated Stanford in the first round before suffering a tough loss to Old Dominion in the second round. The University of Maine won its second national tide in 1998-99. After hanging around the nation's top five for most of the season, UMaine easily won first round and quarterfinal NCAA Tournament games, then dramatically defeated Hockey East foes Boston College and New Hampshire in overtime to capture the championship.
