The UMaine women return with eight players from a year ago and boast an impressive group of newcomers. The recruiting class features the USA Today Vermont Player of the Year, the State of Maine’s Miss Basketball, and two other players over six-foot, four inches tall.

The 1993-1994 season is being looked upon as a rebuilding year for the Black Bears. Both the men’s and women’s teams have suffered from graduation losses. Nonetheless, the hard work and talent of the returnees promises to take both teams in the right direction.

The 1992-93 season marked a year of unparalleled accomplishments for the University of Maine hockey team: The school celebrated its first NCAA Division I team championship in any sport, four in-season tournament titles, the HOCKEY EAST regular season crown and the HOCKEY EAST Championship. With a school record 42 wins. and an incredible .956 winning percentage the accolades afforded last year's team might not be seen at any college in the near future.

Maine went 9-13 during its spring trip to the Rebel Games in Ocoee, Fla., and at the South Florida Pepsi Classic in Tampa. There, the Black Bears won four consecutive games over Valparaiso, Robert Morris, Southeast Missouri State and Evansville. Maine ended on a positive note by beating Winthrop College, 7-3, after falling to nationally-ranked Iowa and Hofstra. Like many teams, the Black Bears suffered numerous game postponements or cancellations because of poor weather. Maine posted a 7-3 record in the regular season, after returning to the Northeast.
