Joanne Palombo, 27, was named head women’s basketball coach at the University of Maine on June 18 by Michael Ploszek, Director of Athletics. Palombo, who is the fourth head coach in the program’s 17-year history, succeeds Trish Roberts, who resigned earlier this year to accept the head coaching position at the University of Michigan.

A native of Brunswick, and the state of Maine’s first Parade Magazine girl’s basketball All-American in 1983, Palombo returns to her home state with high hopes for the future of Black Bear women’s basketball.

As the 1991 season began, it became apparent that the success of the Maine team would hinge on the rate at which the young Black Bear squad would mature. Out of 17 players, 10 were freshmen. The sooner the first-year players could adjust to collegiate play and gain confidence in their abilities, the sooner the Black Bears could be on the road to victory.
