Both the men's and women's teams will face challenging dual meets and championship schedules in 1990-91. The schedule begins with competition from two Canadian schools, before the Black Bears settle into the New England meets. The first semester concludes with the first North Atlantic Conference Championship, while the regular seasons will terminate at the New England Championships. The women's season carries added excitement after the team was selected to host the New Englands.

Last year, Maine remained among the nation's college hockey elite with the team's third consecutive 30-win season and its fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The Black Bears finished with a 33-11-2 overall record, and competed in the HOCKEY EAST Championship game for the fourth consecutive year.

The University of Maine women’s softball team looks at 1990 as a building year. The squad is dominated by freshmen and sophomores. Since the players come from highly visible and competitive high school programs, the freshmen will see action immediately, particularly freshman pitcher Mary Campbell. She has all the pitches and speed to begin a successful career for the Black Bears. Also in the circle is sophomore Sherri Bridges.
