It doesn't take someone long to figure out that Maine head coach Cindy Blodgett has a passion for the University. Whether speaking with local organizations, the media, prospective recruits, or friends of the program, she is quick to point out the storied success of the program and how it will be a part of even bigger and better things in the future.

Blodgett's burning desire to continue the proud tradition of the program is the same one she had while as a player at Maine. The accolades that she accumulated while at Maine as a player speak for themselves... two …

One would think that after winning 50 games and two regular season conference crowns during the last two seasons, the University of Maine women’s basketball team would be ready for a break. Maybe the team would be content to look back at past achievements.

Perhaps the Black Bears need a rest after a successful campaign in which they won the America East Conference crown and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Or possibly, Maine might think its goals and expectations are lowered after losing two-time America East Player of the Year Heather Ernest.

Don’t be confused by Sharon Versyp’s personable demeanor and easy-going smile. Behind that exterior is a fiercely intense competitor who has worked hard and enjoyed success at every stop in her playing and professional career.

This made her first season as a head coach all the more challenging. Versyp took over an inexperienced squad that was further weakened by team injuries and departures. After being selected sixth in the preseason coaches poll, she led her team, made of just eight players at the end of the 2001-2002 campaign, to a respectable fourth-place finish.

It would be an understatement to say the University of Maine is optimistic about the 1999-2000 women’s basketball season. The Black Bears are coming off one of their most successful seasons in the history of the program. They participated in the NCAA Tournament for the fifth straight season and defeated Stanford in the first round before suffering a tough loss to Old Dominion in the second round. UMaine returns all but two players from that team and the returning players make up almost 90 percent of the offensive production from last season. Add to that a talented incoming class that …

The Black Bears will look to put the pieces together as they navigate a challenging schedule and work towards regular and post season championships. Building on an impressive history of success, Maine should continue to be among the national leaders in several categories with an eye on breaking into the Top 25.

The 1996-97 season should be an interesting one for the Black Bears as they pursue a third consecutive conference championship and NCAA berth. In keeping with the UMaine tradition of academic excellence, the two previous teams that competed in the NCAA Tournament have combined for a 3.0 GPA or better. The Black Bears completed the best season in the program’s 21-year history with a 27-5 record last year. The team went undefeated, 18-0, in conference play, the second team to do so in NAC history.

UMaine returns three starters from last year’s squad including the leading scorer in the nation from …

The University of Maine simply dominated games at times last season and there are plenty of reasons why 1995-96 can be a repeat performance. First, Cindy Blodgett, a 5-foot-9 guard, who finished 31st in the nation and second among first-year players in scoring, returns for three more years. She averaged 20.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.3 steals per game while earning Kodak District I All-American and North Atlantic Conference Rookie of the Year honors last season.

Second, UMaine’s other two All-Conference selections, 6-4 Stacey Porrini, and 6-0 Stephanie Guidi will also be back in 1995-96. In fact, four of five …

The North Atlantic Conference moves into its sixteenth year with an eye toward the future. Having just completed one of its finest years ever, both on and off the playing field, the conference is on the move as the 1994-95 academic year arrives. On April 14, 1994, Commissioner Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. announced that Hofstra University and Towson State University had accepted invitations to join the North Atlantic Conference. Hofstra will participate on a limited basis this year and by the 1995-96 academic year both institutions will compete in all sports. “Both institutions have a fine reputation in intercollegiate athletics, …

The UMaine women return with eight players from a year ago and boast an impressive group of newcomers. The recruiting class features the USA Today Vermont Player of the Year, the State of Maine’s Miss Basketball, and two other players over six-foot, four inches tall.

In addition to the new talent, last year’s team gelled together at the end of last season by winning five of its last seven games, including two conference playoff upsets. The lone worry entering the 1993 season, is the loss of the team’s leading scorer and rebounder from a year ago, Heather Briggs. Expectations for …

Second-year head coach Trish Roberts returns all five starters from a team that posted a 19-8 overall record, and cruised to the regular-season Seaboard Conference title. Patricia Roberts, 33, was named head coach of the University of Maine women’s basketball program August 23, 1988, and thus became just the third head coach of that program since its inception as an intercollegiate activity in 1975.

Although this is her first head coaching position, Trish comes with the credentials that will make her an outstanding role model for the women who will make up the 1988-89 roster. An All-American basketball player, an Olympian and a former professional player, Trish has also had valuable coaching experience in the big time of women’s basketball.

What do you do for an encore when your team has completed the season with a 22-7 record and established a new New England Division I record with 18 straight wins to open the campaign? That's the question facing University of Maine Black Bear coach Peter Gavett as he prepares his team for the 1986-87 season. And Gavett expects his Bears will be even better this year. The reason is that everyone except two players returns and in the wings are two outstanding prospects who were redshirted or ineligible to play last season. Gavett also obtained two top recruits, adding …

Women’s basketball, as an intercollegiate activity, had its beginning in the 1971-72 season, along with a number of other women’s sports. Unfortunately, there is no statistical compilation of the early days of women’s basketball until the 1975-76 season. In that season Eilene Fox was named head coach and she continued in that post until the 1983-84 season when Peter Gavett assumed the reins.

Since 1983-84 when Peter Gavett took over as women's basketball coach, the team has undergone many new changes. With the formation of the new Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Seaboard Conference, Maine will be competing against Boston University, University of New Hampshire, Northeastern University, the University of Vermont, Hartford and Brooklyn College on a regular basis for a league championship. Two to four more teams may be added in the next year to give Maine a highly competitive Division I conference. In addition to the conference, Maine has upgraded its schedule to include such nationally ranked teams on the East …
