The educators of Reggio Emilia call the environment the “third teacher” because it “speaks to children about what they can do, how and where they can do it and how they can work together” (Paiman & Terrani, 1998, p.1). They see space as an “aquarium that mirrors the ideas, values, attitudes and cultures of the people who live in it” (Gandini, 1994, p.149). This paper discusses group learning among VCE mathematics students at a combined schools' workshop in Hamilton, Victoria, and at Gippsland Grammar. When tasks with the potential for collaborative groups to discover complexities are used in conjunction with a teaching approach like class collaboration students tend to engage with the tasks, more frequently display the types of characteristics possessed by talented mathematicians, and develop new mathematical understandings. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the tks described in this paper are suitable for such a purpose.

This study of school environment compared teachers' actual and ideal perceptions of principals' interpersonal behaviour. The article describes the development and validation of the Principal Interaction Questionnaire (PIQ), and reports profiles of mean scores obtained for teachers' perceptions of actual and ideal principals' interpersonal behaviour. The study showed that there was a number of significant differences between perceptions of actual and ideal interpersonal behaviour of principals.

This thesis describes a research study that investigated associations between teachers' perceptions of principals' interpersonal behaviour and psychosocial environments of secondary schools in Australia. In the past 25 years, much attention has been given to the development and use of instruments to assess the qualities of the classroom and school environment from the perspectives of students and teachers. A new instrument (the Principal Interaction Questionnaire) was developed and validated to measure principals' interpersonal behaviour as perceived by their teachers. The instrument was developed from the Questionnaire on Teacher Interaction. The teachers' perceptions of the school environments are assessed by the …
