This qualitative study was to understand how African American female students persist in engineering. The broader impact of this study is that it will serve as a model that can be applied to better understand the authentic needs of other underrepresented groups in engineering. It can also lead to the creation of impactful intervention strategies to enhance their persistence. This investigative three-part dissertation consist of a narrative literature review to best examine current literature in the field, current experiences and how these experiences have been addressed; and two empirical studies that address how African American women persist and navigate engineering …

 by

Debra Murdock

Kennesaw State University, 2018

Newly appointed assistant principals face a myriad of challenges.  Often, the roles and responsibilities of assistant principals are ambiguous, primarily consisting of managerial and organizational type tasks.  The lack of a systemic focus for assistant principals coupled with the assigned menial type jobs can leave new assistant principals with professional learning gaps.  In the current model of high-stakes accountability for schools and school districts, educational leaders must redefine the role of assistant principals into a more …

Temperaments And Learning Styles Vs. Academic Performance Of First-Semester Physics Students, Shel Randall

Shel Randall

Purpose: The purpose of this retrospective quantitative correlational study was to determine the relationship of student temperament (as measured by the online Jung Typology Test) and learning styles (as measured by the Felder-Soloman Index of Learning Styles) to academic performance of first-semester physics students while enrolled in a Sierra Community College Physics Department course during the 2014 – 2016 school years
Methodology: This is a retrospective quantitative correlational study of the relationship between student personality information self-reported by survey and student performance as measured by semester grades. The historical survey data consists of results from two online assessments: …

Radiography Faculty Perceptions Of The Effectiveness Of Asynchronous Online Courses, Shirley J. Cherry Jul 2018

Radiography Faculty Perceptions Of The Effectiveness Of Asynchronous Online Courses, Shirley J. Cherry

Shirley J. Cherry

The purpose of this study was to assess radiography faculty perceptions of the effectiveness of asynchronous online courses. Learning effectiveness in a web-based virtual learning environment (VLE) was the conceptual framework for this project (Piccoli, Ahmad, & Ives, 2001). For the purposes of this study, learning effectiveness was defined as the quality of learning being comparable between online and traditional courses (Moore, 2011).

Ten research questions were used to guide this study, and statistical tests were conducted to evaluate 17 null hypotheses. The statistical tests included use of one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson correlations, and single-sample t-tests. Ten of …

Informal Teacher Leadership For Technology Integration: A Multi-Site Case Study Of Distributed Leadership, Taylor J. Clements Apr 2018

Informal Teacher Leadership For Technology Integration: A Multi-Site Case Study Of Distributed Leadership, Taylor J. Clements

Taylor J Clements

The goal of this study was to understand how a secondary principal uses a distributed perspective of leadership to support informal teacher leaders (ITLs) to improve classroom technology integration. Using a phenomenological lens, I employed a multi-site case study to inform the research goals. A conceptual framework based on Bandura’s (1977) social learning theory and Wenger’s (1998) communities of practice theory was used to guide the study’s methods and data collection.

Data were collected in three phases. At each site, the first phase consisted of a digital survey with only closed-ended questions that was administered to all classroom teachers. …

The Leadership Challenge: Preparing And Developing Catholic School Principals, Michael J. Boyle, Alicia Haller, Erika Hunt

Michael Boyle

The increasing emphasis on the myriad of leadership preparation standards have caused university principal preparation programs to necessarily focus on the more secular aspect of leading schools. For the Catholic school principal, this has left little focus on the development of critical strategies to lead for Catholic Identity and faith formation. This article suggests using the National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Schools as a framework for Catholic principal preparation programs to address this issues. Additional suggests for program development are also offered.

An Investigation Of The Attitudes Of Catholic School Principals Towards The Inclusion Of Students With Disabilities, Michael J. Boyle, Claudia M. Hernandez

Michael Boyle

Catholic school principals typically serve as the prime decision-makers in admission and enrollment issues. A key factor in this decision-making can be the principals’ perceptions and attitudes about servicing students with disabilities within a Catholic school context. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the attitudes and perceptions of Catholic school principals toward inclusion of students with disabilities in Catholic schools. Overall, a majority of surveyed principals reported a positive attitude toward including students with disabilities. Some significant relationships were found between principal’s pervious experiences with students with disabilities and the principals’ willingness to enroll students with disabilities. …

This presentation will share the results of two pilot studies using Circles. Circles give people an opportunity to speak and listen to one another in an atmosphere of safety and equality. Circles were used to build and strengthen relationships as well as deliver academic content and increase social/emotional learning principles. One pilot study focused on infusing children’s literature into Circle lessons in a 3rd grade classroom and the second pilot study targeted academic motivation and lack of connectedness for high school students in 9th and 11th grade.

The Access Network: Bringing Together Student Leaders To Support Equity Programs, Gina M. Quan, Chandra A. Turpen

Gina Quan

The Access Network consists of nine university-based programs from across the country working towards a more diverse, equitable, inclusive, and accessible STEM community. Each program places a strong emphasis on undergraduate and graduate student leadership, and some programs are entirely student-led. One component of Access is an annual Assembly, which brings together representatives from current and potential Access sites to update each other, share lessons learned, support each other in overcoming challenges, participate in professional development, and build relationships with others interested in promoting justice in STEM education. The Assembly is co-designed by a team of student leaders from each …
