Using survey data collected from PhD students in five academic disciplines across eight public U.S. universities, the authors compare represented and non-represented graduate student employees in terms of faculty-student relations, academic freedom, and pay. A team of Yale Universitylibrarians developed a research project to understand how humanities doctoral students were identifying, accessing, using, and organizing research materials, and what habits and research methodologies they had developed. In addition the project team attempted to identifychallenges, including workspace needs. Based on the findings, the team prepared recommendations on how the Yale University Library system can better support humanitiesdoctoral students and to help improve their academic success. Although these recommendationsare unique to Yale, other similar libraries may find them to be of use.

To demonstrate the feasibility of a virtual lab, a mixed method study consisting of quantitative surveys and qualitative data, examined changes in doctoral students’ confidence as measured by research outcome expectations and changes in a self-assessment of research knowledge and skills test in a three quarter virtual psychology research lab. In the lab, 10 doctoral students conducted a faculty-designed project, analyzed data, and co-wrote a literature review. Findings indicate lab students’ research knowledge and research outcome expectations improved significantly …
