Small Schools are schools within schools, autonomous of their district and the larger school building principal in which they reside. They are distinct from one another, focused and committed to equity. They are made up of an interdisciplinary team of teachers that share a few hundred or less students in common for instruction. Giving students an opportunity to engage in the construction industry in their home-town will integrate real-world skills into their study of mathematics and connect their lives to their schools and community, making achievment and graduation more meaningful.

The DePaul University IMSP was designed as a longitudinal cohort program. Two cohorts of up to 25 teachers each will be supported. The second cohort is offset by one calendar year. Each teacher will complete a sequence of 12 university graduate-level courses (48 quarter hours), over two and one-half years, leading to a Masters of Science in Science Education (MSSE) degree. Thus, all successful participants will meet or exceed requirements of the designation “highly qualified” as described in the MSSE proposal quoted here.

Adult students seem to have a different learning style requiring a careful approach when using modern technology. They have an expectation for immediate response and effect. The use of learning-at-distance models in higher education, due to the fact that work schedules may interfere with attendance in the traditional manner, could be a major factor in motivating an adult student to return to school. The No Child Left Behind Act [NCLB] mandates testing of all high school students in reading and mathematics by school year 2005-06 and in science by school year 2007-08. Schools are required to make incremental increases in test scores in all students, including minority students, poor children, students with disabilities, and English language learners, setting one hundred percent proficiency as its goal by 2014. Schools that do not make progress in test scores will be subject to punitive and remedial actions.

This instructional strategy utilizes a Problem-based learning (PBL) approach to curriculum development and delivery. Each student is tasked with designing, developing, and reflecting on an appropriate grade level project that is published as a Web based curriculum. The content of the PBL focuses on a current real world science topic while concentrating on specific concepts and skills in both science and technology. The purpose of this integrative approach is to have the learner demonstrate an understanding of scientific inquiry that effectively integrates Web based technologies.

This paper examines the concept of empowerment. It also discusses some of the income generating activities of the Agency for Adult and Non-formal Education (AANFE), Oyo State. This was with the view to determining how income-generating activities have helped adult women to develop skills in their different vocations and how these programmes have made participants to become self-reliant and improved their standard of living. This paper suggests how an advanced technology called pedagogical agents can be applied to English education to benefit learners across ages through computer-assisted language learning (CALL) and content-based language learning (CBLL). CALL, when designed appropriately, has positively influenced the development of a learner’s linguistic proficiency and communicative competence (Chun, 1994; Fotos & Browne, 2004). CBLL integrates language learning with subject-matter learning to make language learning more meaningful (Snow, 2001; Swain, 1998). The number of minority scholars in North American universities and
colleges has increased steadily since the 1980s (Harvey, 2003; U.S.
Department of Education, 2002). This has resulted in some publications
that explore various issues encountered by minority scholars in general
(e.g., Belcher & Conner, 2001; Braine, 1999; Kingston-Mann & Sieber,
2001) and female faculty in particular (Li, 2005; Liang, 2005; Lin et al., 2004;

Community colleges are often criticized for the low numbers of students who ostensibly appear successful. This article takes a unique look a the pathways many community college students take and redefines success as transition. Using the full population of the Los Angeles Community College District, this article examines the intra-institutional transitions of 1) remedial to college level, 2) English as a second language to traditional college courses, and 3) lower to higher academic goals. The University of Texas at El Paso’s field-based program of studies for future teachers provides opportunities for powerful learning through a dialectical union of reflection and action. Methods courses in academic disciplines are linked with seminars and coursework on community partnerships, critical pedagogy and culturally responsive education. This article illustrates the processes of planning, implementation and evaluation of this approach, highlighting the impacts of community service learning. Parents, students and future teachers interact in workshops that center on validating native language literacy, increasing parental involvement and providing conceptually correct science education. In 2004, the State of Texas authorized the Texas Master Science Teacher certification. This post-baccalaureate certification provided a much-needed opportunity for experienced science teachers to be formally recognized for their leadership roles at a time in which science instruction was being impacted by a number of sometimes competing state and national initiatives. This article describes the steps and lessons learned by the team that implemented the first Master Science Teacher program in Texas.
