“It Takes a Valley” is a teacher preparation program that aims to recruit and retain teachers in schools that serve students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. This program provides future teachers with extensive early teaching experience and chances to develop strategies for success in this type of educational context. Part of a special section on connecting with adolescents. Although few adolescents are ever formally exposed to philosophy at middle or high school, almost all are philosophers in the sense that they ask and seek answers to questions that are fundamentally philosophical. Furthermore, studying philosophy can be quite useful for adolescents as it requires that they practice developing clear and coherent reasons for believing or doing something, provides the tools with which they can follow the logic of any ideological stance, and provides models of alternative answers and a way of examining how the historical period in which one lives …
