John Griffith

In the school of Aerospace Medicine, the average cost to train one student in the three month Aeromedical Apprentice course in 1998 was $12,500. In this course, students are trained to become medical technicians who are able to effectively support Air Force Flight Surgeons in emergency situations. Students who failed the course of study were eliminated from the program at a cost of thousands of taxpayer dollars with no realized gain by the government or the student. A recent study examined the effects of a study skills training intervention course on U.S. Air Force Aeromedical Apprentices with five main purposes. …

Gloria Gordon PhD

The term ‘towards bicultural competence’ in the title of my doctoral thesis: Towards Bicultural Competence: Researching for Personal and Professional Transformations refers to my desire to become competent in negotiating the two cultures (British and African Caribbean) of my dual heritage. The lack of competence which is implied in the title has been a major problem in my personal and professional life and was therefore an important insight thrown up by my research efforts.

Does Community College Versus Four-Year College Attendance Influence Students' Educational Plans?, Ernest T. Pascarella, Marcia Edison, Amaury Nora, Linda Serra Hagedorn, Patrick T. Terenzini

Linda Serra Hagedorn

In this study researchers tested the hypothesis that community college attendance lowers students' precollege plans to obtain a bachelor of arts degree. In the presence of controls for precollege plans, other background factors, and college academic and nonacademic experiences, community college students initially planning to obtain a bachelor of arts degree were between 20% and 31% more likely than similar four-year college students to lower their plans below a bachelor of arts degree by the end of the second year of college.

Campaigns Against Gender Violence (1977-1993), Professor Vibhuti Patel

Professor Vibhuti Patel

The women's movement in India launched campaigns against rape, domestic violence, sexism in advertisements as well as against state repression during caste and communal riots in the early eighties. Before that, during the postemergency period of 1977-1980, small groups of women's rights activists in Hyderabad, Bombay, Delhi and Madras had started taking up individual cases of custodial rape, deaths of-housewives under mysterious circumstances and excesses by the state enforcement machinery during caste/communal riots which had increased in number and intensity of violence. The mass of poor women involved in the struggles of the tribal people, the industrial working classes and …

The Political Legacy Of School Accountability Systems, Sherman Dorn Jan 1998

The Political Legacy Of School Accountability Systems, Sherman Dorn

Sherman Dorn

The recent battle reported from Washington about proposed national testing program does not tell the most important political story about high stakes tests. Politically popular school accountability systems in many states already revolve around statistical results of testing with high-stakes environments. The future of high stakes tests thus does not depend on what happens on Capitol Hill. Rather, the existence of tests depends largely on the political culture of published test results. Most critics of high-stakes testing do not talk about that culture, however. They typically focus on the practice legacy of testing, the ways in which testing creates perverse …

One For The Crows, One For The Crackers: The Strange Career Of Public Higher Education In Houston, Texas, Amilcar Shabazz

Amilcar Shabazz

The dynamics of how the dual system of higher education in Jim Crow America emerged and operated is explored in this article in the context of the largest city in the 20th century U.S. South: Houston, Texas. The history herein moves from a pragmatic response to a deep need for postsecondary educational opportunity in the 1920s to a major expansion in the 1940s in the face of the lawsuit of Heman Sweatt to the 1960s after state-mandated segregation is officially ended.

‘Contrary To Our Way Of Thinking’: The Struggle For An American Indian Center In Chicago, Grant Arndt Jan 1998

‘Contrary To Our Way Of Thinking’: The Struggle For An American Indian Center In Chicago, Grant Arndt

Grant Arndt

When Chicago’s American Indian Center opened in 1953, it had a small core of dedicated leaders, but little support in the city. The Center’s board of directors had applied for funding to Chicago’s Metropolitan Welfare Council, the main clearing- house of philanthropic funding in the city, only to be told that the Center’s existence was “contrary to our way of thinking.” 1 It was not the first time that Native Americans seeking to cre- ate urban organizations had encountered rejection. For years, local Native American activists had found that urban Indians and Native American urban organizations were contrary to the …

Historical Antecedents Shaping Concept Of Andragogy: A Comparison Of Sources And Roots, John A. Henschke Edd

John A. Henschke

Although there is not one standard definition of the term "andragogy" in any one country or the numerous countries in which it has some recognition, andragogy is becoming a rallying term to identify theory, research and practice in the realm of adult education in some countries around the world, while finding resistance in others. Probing into and understanding some of the historical antecedents -- sources, roots and perceptions (or misperceptions) -- which have shaped and continue to shape varying conceptions of andragogy, may help to clarify and articulate a definition and direction for the further study of andragogy as an …
