A Longitudinal Case Study On The Use Of Assistive Technology To Support Cognitive Processes, Vivian Johnson, Carol Price

Vivian Johnson

This chapter describes a chronology of increasingly sophisticated technological supports and interventions used across complex formal and informal educational settings with a 10th grade female student who has documented learning challenges. A progression from low technology devices to computerized, high technology assistive devices are employed to provide access to materials and to academic information over a period of 10 years. Understanding both the inner and outer context of this learner’s environment provides the reader with a background to process the progression of the use, improvement, and availability of assistive technology in the life of this user.

Understanding Dynamic Change And Creation Of Learning Organizations, Michael Hartoonian, Vivian Johnson

Vivian Johnson

In a letter to the editor of the New York Times, Mark Peck (May 6, 2007), a 10th grade student, notes “it’s too bad that students have to take the rap for old-style teachers who are still not comfortable with the computer as an educational tool” (p. A22). Mark’s comment was in response to a front-page article that highlighted how little substantive change had occurred in the learning environments of schools that instituted laptop programs. In succinct terms, Mark identifies a major barrier to meaningful adoption of new technologies by stating that “computer-based learning initiatives are not going to take …

Opportunities And Opportunity Cost In Preparing Millennium Teachers, Michael Hartoonian, Vivian Johnson Dec 2008

Opportunities And Opportunity Cost In Preparing Millennium Teachers, Michael Hartoonian, Vivian Johnson

Vivian Johnson

The millennium teacher is presented with two powerful conceptions. One is expressed in Pogo’s observation that “…we always seem to be confronted with insurmountable opportunity.” The other is presented best in T.S. Eliot’s poem, “Choruses To The Rock.” • Where is the knowledge we have lost in information? • Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge? Both of these conceptions have direct implications for teacher educators and their work with the next generation of teachers. “Insurmountable opportunity” is the reality for teachers who have not developed the ability to make “enlightened choices.” Enlightened decision making in a sea …

The Impact Of An Innovative Model Of Professional Development, Vivian Johnson

Vivian Johnson

This paper describes participant reaction to an informal field test of the Identifying Changes, Exploring Possibilities, and Developing Technology Skills (ICED) Professional Development Model. The theoretical framework for the ICED model is drawn from three sources: (1) literature review of the change process, specifically the adoption of innovation, best practices for the professional development of teachers, and the integration of technology in the professional practice of teachers; (2) direct experience with the design, delivery, and assessment of technology-related professional development for K-16 teachers; and (3) reflective dialogue regarding the conditions that are necessary to integrate technology in a substantive way …

Using Computer Databases In Student Problem Solving: A Study Of Eight Social Studies Teachers’ Classes, Lee H. Ehman, Allen D. Glenn, Vivian Johnson, Charles S. White

Vivian Johnson

Recent research has shown that computer technology, including databases, is becoming a part of social studies instruction. Yet it still is not clear how teachers are using databases and what are the outcomes from such use. The research reported in this document addresses three principal questions: (1) How do teachers use computer databases in teaching problem solving? (2) What do students learn during this kind of activity? and (3) What are the enablers and inhibitors of successful database use during teaching and problem solving? A case study approach was used in exploring the answers to these questions. Eight teachers and …
