Sacred Heart University has announced the formation of a Department of Catholic Studies, the goal of which is to administer a key component of the University’s core curriculum, the seminars in the Catholic intellectual tradition, as well as an interdisciplinary minor in Catholic studies. Michele Loris is the chair of the new department.

Sacred Heart University English Professor Michelle Loris of Fairfield has recently been honored by several academic organizations. The awards will positively influence SHU’s new core curriculum that will be introduced in the fall of 2015. Loris is the current Connecticut Professor of the Year and is acting dean of SHU’s College of Arts & Sciences.

The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education have named Sacred Heart University’s Professor Michelle Loris the 2013 Connecticut Professor of the Year. Loris was selected from more than 350 top professors in the United States.

Description of a fourteen week course taught by Michelle Loris, professor of English at Sacred Heart University. The course, titled Recent Ethnic American Fictions, introduced students to several concepts from contemporary literary theory. The theories included New Criticism, Deconstruction, Cultural Studies, New Historicism, and Feminist Theory. The assumption was that these concepts would give students the tools to become critical readers, which would then provide them with a deeper understanding of these multicultural novels and their particular cultural contexts.
