Can Engagement Be Compared? Measuring Academic Engagement For Comparison, Ling Tan, Xiaoxun Sun, Siek Toon Khoo Jun 2016

Can Engagement Be Compared? Measuring Academic Engagement For Comparison, Ling Tan, Xiaoxun Sun, Siek Toon Khoo

Dr Siek Toon Khoo

Student engagement is a reflection of active involvement in learning. In digital learning environment, research studies on engagement have been focused on detecting behavioral and psychological engagement indicators from the patterns of activities using feature engineering, but student engagement estimates were rarely compared across sessions or across domains of learning. This paper describes how this could be done by revisiting engagement instrument, diagnosing engagement indicators, estimating engagement parameters, and equating. This study illustrates how engagement reliability can be improved by refining engagement indictors. We demonstrated through DataShop data that student engagement levels can be compared across domains of learning.

Equating And Scaling For Monitoring Student Achievement Over Time, Siek Toon Khoo Mar 2014

Equating And Scaling For Monitoring Student Achievement Over Time, Siek Toon Khoo

Dr Siek Toon Khoo

This presentation describes the equating procedures used in the Australian National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy. The procedures used involve combining information obtained through vertical and longitudinal equating to place new assessment on the historic scale in order that achievement can be monitored over time across four grade levels.

Literacy In The First Three Years Of School : A Longitudinal Investigation, Marion Meiers, Siek Toon Khoo Jul 2011

Literacy In The First Three Years Of School : A Longitudinal Investigation, Marion Meiers, Siek Toon Khoo

Dr Siek Toon Khoo

The ACER Longitudinal Literacy and Numeracy Study (LLANS) was designed to follow the growth in literacy and numeracy of a single cohort of students across the years of primary school. A sample of 1000 students in 100 schools formed the cohort for the study, which commenced in 1999. A linked set of literacy assessment tasks focused on key aspects of literacy was developed for the LLANS. Assessment data collected across the years of primary school provided information needed to construct a long LLANS literacy scale covering the full range of proficiency. The scale was used to measure change and track …

The Vit Program For Supporting Provisionally Registered Teachers : Evaluation Of Implementation In 2005., Lawrence Ingvarson, Elizabeth Kleinhenz, Siek Toon Khoo, Jenny Wilkinson

Dr Siek Toon Khoo

The VIT’s Program for Supporting Provisionally Registered Teachers and its registration procedures are increasingly seen as valid and fair. The Program is generally perceived as leading to improvements in teaching practice. Principals and mentors were very positive about the program, and consistently reported high levels of satisfaction with its implementation. Research has repeatedly found that significant reforms are often accompanied by a degree of unease and resistance, and this has been the case with the introduction of the VIT standards and registration requirements. School leaders play a vital role in leading their schools through these changes. This study has found …

Attitudes, Intentions And Participation, Siek Toon Khoo, John Ainley May 2009

Attitudes, Intentions And Participation, Siek Toon Khoo, John Ainley

Dr Siek Toon Khoo

This report examines the relationship between students' attitudes to school and intentions to participate in education and training, and the influence of these attitudes and intentions on participation in Year 12 and in further education and training. Students' attitudes to school, educational intentions and attainments are considered in the context of earlier school achievement, social background, geographic location, language background and gender. These factors are related to attitudes, intentions and participation. [p.1]

Analysing Hierarchical Data With Multivariate Outcomes: Beyond Multilevel Regression Models, Siek Khoo

Dr Siek Toon Khoo

Multilevel regression models are now well established and widely applied in analyses of hierarchical data – typically to account for variation in only one univariate response variable at level 1. However, many substantive research questions call for more complex models. For the analyses of hierarchical data with multivariate outcomes, multilevel mean and covariance structure modelling in the structural equation modelling framework offers great flexibility and modelling opportunities. This paper describes the basic concepts of two-level mean and covariance structure analysis of hierarchical data, and showcases application examples. The paper focuses on fitting possible models requiring multilevel applications and highlight: (a) …

Longitudinal Pathways Linking Family Factors And Sibling Relationship Qualities To Adolescent Substance Use And Sexual Risk Behaviors, Patricia East, Siek Toon Khoo Dec 2004

Longitudinal Pathways Linking Family Factors And Sibling Relationship Qualities To Adolescent Substance Use And Sexual Risk Behaviors, Patricia East, Siek Toon Khoo

Dr Siek Toon Khoo

This 3-wave, 5-year longitudinal study tested the contributions of family contextual factors and sibling relationship qualities to younger siblings' substance use, sexual risk behaviours, pregnancy, and sexually transmitted disease. More than 220 non-White families participated (67 percent Latino and 33 percent African American), all of which involved a younger sibling (133 girls and 89 boys; mean age=13.6 years at Time 1) and an older sister (mean age=17 years at Time 1). Results from structural equation latent growth curve modelling indicated that qualities of the sibling relationship (high older sister power, low warmth/closeness, and low conflict) mediated effects from several family …

Longitudinal Methods, Siek Toon Khoo, Stephen West, Wei Wu, Oi Man Kwok Dec 2004

Longitudinal Methods, Siek Toon Khoo, Stephen West, Wei Wu, Oi Man Kwok

Dr Siek Toon Khoo

This chapter looks at the psychological measurement of the same set of participants on multiple occasions, ideally using the same (or equivalent) measurement instruments. Longitudinal designs explicitly determine the temporal ordering of the observations. This temporal ordering of observations provides an enhanced ability to elucidate stability and change in individuals over time, to study time-related processes, and to establish the direction of hypothesised causal relationships.
