Many ESL learners exhibit diffidence in situations where they are required to speak in English. They retreat into their shells because of the threat of embarrassment and a loss of face which are consequences of making errors in grammar and pronunciation. One effective method of inducing them to speak is drama. By putting them in imaginary situations and creating make-believe identities, teachers can give them incentives to participate in oral interaction, thereby increasing the quantity of speech produced and providing increased practice in speaking in the target language. The focus of this paper is on the use of drama in English-language learning. It discusses the writer's use of drama techniques in teaching his language-learners at Bond University, Australia. The writer presents the advantages of drama over traditional teaching methodology and discusses the characteristics of learners and teachers involved in the application of such techniques. Throughout the paper, reference is made to the findings and philosophies of researchers and practitioners associated with the use of drama strategies. It concludes with the suggestion that the relevant authorities should recognise drama as an innovative strategy and consider raising its profile.

This paper will discuss the problems facing overseas-Asian students who study law in Western universities and will deal with how drama can help improve their English-language oral-communication skills. A profile of the average student belonging to a high-context, relational culture will be provided with the aim of showing why such a student needs full-on immersion in oral English. An attempt will be made to suggest that the activities and materials employed by instructors using such a strategy can help lower students’ affective barriers and increase their confidence, motivation and spontaneity when speaking, while improving their non-verbal skills.
