Occupation-Based Conceptualisations Of Socioeconomic Status, Julie Mcmillan

This paper focuses upon occupation-based conceptualisations of socioeconomic status (SES). Using occupational data to measure the SES of individuals is a two-step process, whereby it is necessary to first collect and code occupational data, usually in accordance with an official occupational classification, and second, to recode these data into a measure of SES. There are three broad types of measures available – class, occupational prestige, and socioeconomic indices – and within these broad types, a large array of conceptualisation and measures are available.
