The New California System Of Remediation Of College Students, Linda Serra Hagedorn Nov 1999

The New California System Of Remediation Of College Students, Linda Serra Hagedorn

Linda Serra Hagedorn

The higher education news is full of stories about New York's latest decision to phase-out remedial education at 9 of the 11 City University of New York (CUNY System) campuses. Remedial education will be the responsibility of the already overworked New York State community college system.

Although this decision is being heralded as drastic it apparently has escaped many that California has already adopted a similar plan. California has a somewhat unique system of postsecondary institutions. Basically there are three layers of institutions each with a different mission and culture. At the top of the hierarchy of prestige is the …

Dr. Mamoudou H. Dicko. Purification Et Propriétés Physico-Chimiques Des Enzymes De Curculigo Pilosa, Gladiolus Klattianus Et Boscia Senegalensis Catalysant L'Hydrolyse Des Polysaccharides (Amidon Et Béta-Glucanes), Mamoudou H. Dicko Prof.

Pr. Mamoudou H. DICKO, PhD

The objective of this study was the research of novel and inexpensive sources of polysaccharides degrading enzymes such as amylases and glucanases from local plants in order to justify their biotechnological applications. The isolation of two l3-amylases and an endo-1,3-ß-D-glucanase was reached using common protein purification methods such as buffer extraction, ammonium sulfate fractionation, ionexchange and gel filtration chromatographies. The methods used were simple and easily reproducible, suggesting the possibilfty of large-scale production. ln the crude extract of Curculigo pilosa tuber, only ß-amylase was detected as starch degrading enzyme and its activity was approximately 282 Uig of fresh material. The …

Institutional Changes And Discretionary Value For Property Rights In Drylands’ Farming Of The Sudan, Professor Issam A.W. Mohamed Jun 1999

Institutional Changes And Discretionary Value For Property Rights In Drylands’ Farming Of The Sudan, Professor Issam A.W. Mohamed

Professor Issam A.W. Mohamed

Research on land tenure and use control and the socioeconomic sets of regulations in the agricultural rainfed sub sector of Sudan, come to focus for many reasons. Anthropogenic pressure, expanding animal population and migration led to accelerated impacts on both the ecological systems and land yields. Conflicts between governmental regulations and indigenous rules contribute to generate inconsistencies on who have the right to till the land and hence own it. With such transformation logically, more intensive commercial farming took place and land intake exponentially increased. Private or collective property rights of land are procured through traditional tenure, prescription, settlement or …

Introduction To Engineering Problem Solving—A New Course For 1100 First Year Engineering Students, Richard L. Porter, Laura J. Bottomley, Mary Clare Robbins, Walthea V. Yarbrough, Sarah A. Rajala, Hugh Fuller

Sarah A. Rajala

During the past several years, NC State University has offered several experimental courses designed for the first year student in engineering; IMPEC, an integrated approach to mathematics, physics, engineering, and chemistry; E123, a mechanical dissection course which is now linked with the first year writing and composition course; and ECE 292D, a hands-on team based design course offered to upper class students as well. All were offered as an alternative to the introductory course (E100) that had little academic content, no engineering problem solving, and consisted of a large lecture room format with information dissemination as the major goal. Although …

Cindy_Sherman_The_Rhetoric_Of_Writing_Wi.Pdf, Barry J. Mauer

Barry Mauer

My dissertation proposes an arts model of humanities learning for a computerized networked writing environment. Through case studies of Picasso's cubist paintings, Cindy Sherman's Untitled Film Stills, and the Hollywood star system, I discuss the invention of a new rhetoric for media practices within the institutional frames of art and entertainment. My goal is to develop a rhetoric for hypermedia practices within education. As a work of heuretics, which uses the logic of invention rather than interpretation, my dissertation explores art, theory and criticism as resources for a hybrid genre of writing within electronic media. In this genre, students …

Does Examinee Motivation Moderate The Relationship Between Test Consequences And Test Performance?, Donna L. Sundre Jan 1999

Does Examinee Motivation Moderate The Relationship Between Test Consequences And Test Performance?, Donna L. Sundre

Donna L. Sundre

There is substantial evidence that the disposition of test takers is central to performance. This research extends previous work by replicating the experimental design of L. Wolf and J. Smith (1995) and conducting a secondary analysis of their data to attempt to demonstrate differential effect sizes for examinees reporting varying motivation levels in consequences versus no-consequences situations. The second phase of the study investigated the hypothesis that examinee motivation and item type moderate the relationship between test consequences and test performance by expanding the Wolf and Smith design to include multiple-choice and essay test items. Ninety undergraduate psychology majors participated …

The Tarlqat Al- 'Alawiyyah And The Emergence Of The Shi'i School In Indonesia And Malaysia, Syed Farid Alatas

farid alatas

The recent emergence and current development of the Imami Shi'i school in Indonesia and Malaysia can only be understood against the backdrop of the early history of the Si 'ah, as well as that of the history of the Islamization of the Malay-Indonesian tor that binds these three historical processes together in a remarkable case of "conversion" within Islam is the 'olawiyyali sufi order (al-tariqah Archipelago.

Problems With Peirce's Concept Of Abduction, Michael H.G. Hoffmann Jan 1999

Problems With Peirce's Concept Of Abduction, Michael H.G. Hoffmann

Michael H.G. Hoffmann

Abductive reasoning takes place in forming "hypotheses" in order to explain "facts." Thus, the concept of abduction promises an understanding of creativity in science and learning. It raises, however, also a lot of problems. Some of them will be discussed in this paper: After analyzing the difference between induction and abduction (1), I shall discuss Peirce's claim that there is a "logic" of abduction (2). The thesis is that this claim can be understood, if we make a clear distinction between inferential elements and perceptive elements of abductive reasoning. For Peirce, the creative act of forming explanatory hypotheses and the …

Journalism/ Mass Communication Program World Wide Web Sites: Content, Functionality And Promotional Value, Douglas J. Swanson Ed.D Apr

Douglas J. Swanson, Ed.D APR

Despite the popularity of promotionally-oriented Web sites within journalism/ mass communication programs in higher education, there has been little examination of sites and their contents. Almost no research has focused on visual, informational, and operational enhancements, or how Web sites of different higher education programs in the discipline differ from each other. This research addresses some of the unanswered questions about how journalism/ mass communication Web sites use enhancements to communicate with online users.

Post-Tenure Review Through Post-Tenure Development: What Linking Senior Faculty And Technology Taught Us, Mary Deane Sorcinelli

Mary Deane Sorcinelli

This article highlights a faculty development program designed to allow mid-career and senior faculty to effectively apply the capacities of technology to teaching and learning. It provides a profile of senior faculty and their work satisfactions and stresses; describes a senior teaching fellows program, TEACHnology, as one mechanism for senior faculty reviatalization; and suggests the kinds of practices that seem to best support senior faculty in terms of career development. It concludes with implications of such faculty development processes for meeting some of the challenges of post-tenure
