Big Data In Education – An International Perspective, Robert Hassell, Sacha Develle Apr 2015

Big Data In Education – An International Perspective, Robert Hassell, Sacha Develle

Dr Sacha DeVelle

The authors report on research they originally undertook for AISNSW, exploring how schools in Finland, Singapore, Japan and Ontario use data to inform improvements in student learning. These jurisdictions have regularly outperformed Australia in their results for PISA and other international assessments. The authors address: the types of data schools collect in the different jurisdictions and their explicit improvement agenda; how ‘big education data’ is used by schools; the future of data use, including ‘big data in education’; and exemplars of effective data use in schools. They identify implications emerging from their research and recommend future actions that are relevant ...

Teaching Qualitative Research Methods With Atlas.Ti: Beyond Data Analysis, Trena M. Paulus, Ann Bennett Jun 2014

Teaching Qualitative Research Methods With Atlas.Ti: Beyond Data Analysis, Trena M. Paulus, Ann Bennett

Trena M. Paulus

This presentation will share best practices for integrating ATLAS.ti into advanced qualitative research methods courses. During the spring, summer and the current fall 2013 semesters, students were required to use ATLAS.ti as a project management tool for their semester’s work in order to develop the skills they would need to continue its use during the thesis phase of their programs. In these courses students are typically engaged in independent field work projects, in which they are reviewing the literature, collecting data, transcribing, and/or engaging in data analysis. Each of these phases were conducted within ATLAS.ti ...

Martin Murphy

This report describes the technical aspects of the National ITC Literacy Sample Assessment and summarises the main activities involved in the data collection, the data collection instruments and the analysis and reporting of the data. Chapter 2 summarises the development of the assessment domain and describes the process of item development and construction of the instruments. Chapter 3 reviews the sample design and describes the sampling process. Chapter 3 also describes the process of weighting to derive population estimates. Chapter 4 summarises the field administration and data management procedures, including quality control and the cleaning and coding of the data ...

Technical Report Of Brunei Nsscme 2008, Andrew Stephanou, Ling Tan

Dr Ling Tan

A collaboration between ACER and the Ministry of Education in Brunei Darussalam aims to establish an assessment monitoring system in government schools, NSSCME (National Study of Student Competencies in Mathematics and English), and to assist in building test development and psychometrics capacity. ACER’s input is in the examination of the Brunei curriculum, development of assessment instruments in line with the curriculum, construction of reporting scales, and training of staff in item writing, marking, interpretation of results, educational measurement and use of data analysis software. A comprehensive workshop program for item writers, teachers and officers is being conducted both in ...

Sampling For National Surveys In Education, Martin Murphy, Wolfram Sculz

Martin Murphy

The aim of this paper is to provide PMRT and its subgroups with information about the sampling processes used in surveys conducted under its National Assessment Plan (NAP). The design of national surveys in education in recent years has been strongly influenced by the methodologies used in major international surveys, particularly TIMSS and PISA. In the discussion below, reference will be made to the methods used in these surveys, and their application in the context of Australian national surveys. The intention of this paper is to explain the major steps in the survey sampling process, the reasons for the methods ...
