Indigenous Nurse And White Settler Nurse Teaching Teams: Learning To Disrupt With Indigenist Nursing Education, Leanne Kelly, Kim Daly

Purpose: Nurse educators are called on to confront the reality of systemic racism embedded in their own institutions as they educate students to promote equity through strength-based Indigenous-specific anti-racist practice. However, schools of nursing and nursing pedagogies centre whiteness. White settler nurse educators often lack the competence and confidence to teach an anti-racist and Indigenist curriculum. Indigenous nurse educators often bear a disproportionate responsibility for anti-racist and Indigenist curriculum while also being in the minority and lacking institutional support. Innovative and effective teaching strategies are required to address these issues.

The stories of three alaka‘i wahine (Native Hawaiian women leaders) who are involved with cultural and linguistic early education environments that promote family and child interaction are featured here. Through interviews and interactions their stories and work are highlighted for stakeholders to glean from lessons they have learned. This work is framed through the lens of (re)imagining educational systems for Native Hawaiian children to experience education that is congruent with their heritage, their family, and their cultural ways of being. Each August, Sugpiaq Elders, community members, and educators gather in Cape Alitak to host Akhiok Kids Camp, a week-long culture camp that provides a space for local Sugpiaq youth to learn and carry forward traditional lifeways and promotes youth’s self-esteem, identity, and healthy choices. This article traces the legacy of the camp and outlines its ongoing vision and curriculum, including the Indigenous values and principles of education that guide camp activities. The Cheyenne and Arapaho Department of Education (CADOE) functions as a tribal education department (TED) in western rural Oklahoma, situated within a tribal government that has a total membership of 13,212, 3,160 of whom are ages 3–18 years. CADOE has supported and advocated for equal opportunity and access for Cheyenne and Arapaho families and students since its inception.
