Remote learning that must be carried out by schools in Indonesia during the COVID-19 pandemic was a challenge for most teachers. This study aimed to investigate mathematical conversations maintained by the teachers in remote learning of mathematics during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was a descriptive qualitative study that was analyzed based on school time during the pandemic, online teaching platforms used, the way the teachers carry out remote learning of mathematics, and how the teachers and the students interact. The University of Kentucky Dietetics and Human Nutrition (UK DHN) program promotes critical thinking and integrates the hard skills learned in the classroom with soft skills required in a professional setting. In this perspectives piece, the author, a literacy education teacher educator, discusses his struggles several years earlier to adapt and transfer a conceptually dense face-to-face course to an online format—a struggle with which many of his colleagues who were faced with transferring their courses to an online format in light of the COVID-19 and institutional closings could identify. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, 75 teacher candidates from SUNY Old Westbury were engaged in their Applied Learning Practicum in public schools across Long Island. Of those students, 18 were in the Exceptional Education and Learning Department. When the first teacher candidate was asked to leave her placement, faculty in the Exceptional Education and Learning Department pivoted to design an individualized learning plan for each teacher candidate to augment their clinical placement experience.
