Trotter Review
The United States is experiencing a crisis in the training of scientific and technical personnel. A recent report from the National Science Foundation (NSF) indicates that the number of U.S. citizens earning science and engineering doctorates has decreased nearly 5% since 1980. The National Research Council's study of the adequacy of research support for the mathematical sciences in the United States reveals that not only has the production of Ph.D.s in mathematics declined since 1969-70, but the percentage of U.S. citizens receiving those degrees fell during the last decade from 78% of all mathematics Ph.D.s to only 61% of all …

Microscale Cartesian Diver Activities, John J. Mauch
Microscale Cartesian Diver Activities, John J. Mauch
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Because air has weight, it exerts pressure. The air in a room can weigh as much as 100 kilograms, which is the weight of a large person. Air can also be compressed into small containers, such as those used by underwater divers. Teachers can construct several toys called Cartesian divers which will rise and fall exactly as a diving bell does. The toys are called "Cartesian" because the principle of moving diving machines by air pressure was first explained by Rene Descartes, a 16th century mathematician. This exercise is divided up into four parts: "A Cartesian Retriever," "The Cartesian Helicopter," …
An Epa Water Quality Test For Middle Schools: Filterable Residue, Charles Englund
An Epa Water Quality Test For Middle Schools: Filterable Residue, Charles Englund
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
One part of the Clean Water Act requires monitoring the quantity of suspended particles in water. Water is tested before and after being used by industries. The quantity of suspended particles is measured by weighing the residue filtered from the water. This experiment, appropriate for use with upper elementary and junior high students, provides an opportunity to participate in a water quality test used by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Minimal equipment is needed; no hazardous material is involved and the experiment gives interesting results on local water. The results are recorded in milligrams per liter, which is parts per …
State Indicators In Science And Mathematics Education: A Comparison Of Iowa And The United States, John Ramsey
State Indicators In Science And Mathematics Education: A Comparison Of Iowa And The United States, John Ramsey
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The first state-by-state data of key indicators of the condition of science and mathematics in schools has been issued in a report from the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). This report, State Indicators of Science and Mathematics Education, is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation. The project identified two objectives: (1) to improve the quality and usefulness of data on science and mathematics education so that state policy makers and program managers can make more informed decisions; and (2) to define and implement a set of indicators, national and state level analyses of progress in …

Science Notes - Nsf Sponsors Oceanography Summer Program, Paul D. Jones
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Are you interested in an NSF-sponsored oceanography summer program in Massachusetts combining three weeks of intensive study with a two week "final exam" at sea? If you are, Sea Experience may be the program for you. Classrooms on land are located in a picturesque setting just outside Woods Hole, Massachusetts, while the tall-masted 134-foot S.S.V. Corwith Cramer provides the setting for the final weeks of study.
An Inexpensive And Collapsible Plant Growth Frame, Al Janulaw, Mat Keller
An Inexpensive And Collapsible Plant Growth Frame, Al Janulaw, Mat Keller
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
This plant growth frame was designed for use in second and fourth grade classrooms as a part of National Science Foundation Grant TEI 8751303, Materials and Assistance for Science Teaching (MAST). We needed frames that were relatively inexpensive, could be made from locally available materials and would be easy to store when not in use. The frame is made from PVC pipe. The light source is a 48-inch, two-bulb shop light, using ordinary fluorescent tubes. A plug-in timer is used to control the time of illumination. Our first models included a plywood base, but some teachers have omitted this. The …

Science Notes - Marshland Magic Workshops, Jonna M. Higgins
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
A "Marshland Magic" workshop will be held July 17-19, 1992, to provide an opportunity for educators and their families to explore the origin, history and ecology of wetlands, as well as opportunities for and effects of human interactions with them. The workshop and campsite will be based at Cooper's Cove, but activities will take place throughout Pocahontas County. Graduate credit is available from Morningside College, and the Arrowhead AEA is offering staff development credit.

Science Notes - Summer Opportunities For Math And Science Teachers, Jonna M. Higgins
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Northwest Missouri State University is seeking high school level math and/or science teachers interested in teaming with Northwest University instructors as part of an Upward Bound administered summer program. Team members' job responsibilities include teaching students, guiding and monitoring student laboratory work and research, evaluating student work, attending weekend activities and/or field trips and evaluating the program. The major emphasis of instruction will be to integrate the topics of the week in a manner that will help students understand that knowledge is not discrete.
Science Notes - Student Opportunities To Name Features On Venus
Science Notes - Student Opportunities To Name Features On Venus
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
When astronomers and planetary geologists first see a new terrain feature on Venus, they typically assign both a descriptive term (like "crater," "corona" or "mons") as well as a particular name. Since Venus was the Roman goddess of love, scientists have decided to name its features after famous females throughout history. Most of the large features, like the Venusian land masses Aphrodite Terra and Ishtar Terra, have been named for love goddesses from other cultures. Although names for many of the craters have already been proposed, the International Astronomical Union, which is the sole authority for assigning names to celestial …
