This article traces the development of high-stakes assessments in public education in Texas, with the focus primarily on the exit examination required for graduation in grades K-12. The article also traces the results of that exit exam as we look at the alterative education settings that have been developed to assure that at-risk, economically disadvantaged students meet the requirements of the exit examination in order to receive their high school diploma.
