For ten years, Dr. Jill Newton has coordinated the Maymester in Tanzania program and has created a highly successful and compelling program. Her aim for this program was to create a mini Peace Corps experience for Purdue University students, seeing as she has herself served as a Corps member in Papua New Guinea. One of the most impactful and rewarding components of this program is the service learning opportunities she encourages. Teaching Photosynthesis To Eighth Graders: A Graduate Service-Learning Experience In A Local Science Class, Cecilia Espinoza

The purpose of this service-learning experience was to provide a graduate student from a land-grant university with a teaching experience at a local public school. Through a GK–12 program, author assisted a middle school science teacher in the development of class activities and engaged eighth graders in active learning. In this program, 132 eighth grade students participated in a series of active learning activities developed by the author in collaboration with the teacher. These activities aimed to enhance students’ understanding of the process of photosynthesis.

Quality Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education is vital for the future success of students. Integrated STEM education is one way to make learning more connected and relevant for students. There is a need for further research and discussion on the knowledge, experiences, and background that teachers need to effectively teach integrated STEM education. A support, teaching, efficacy, and materials (s.t.e.m.) model of considerations for teaching integrated STEM education was developed through a year-long partnership with a middle school.
