Practical Femininity: The Student Development Of Legally Blonde’S Elle Woods, Elizabeth S. Rodericks
Practical Femininity: The Student Development Of Legally Blonde’S Elle Woods, Elizabeth S. Rodericks
The Graduate Review
College experiences often involve challenges that can provide the impetus for personal and professional growth. Likewise, Elle Woods of the film Legally Blonde undergoes multiple significant changes in her sense of identity, morality, and ability to take charge of her own life after she is forced to radically change her perspective and priorities. This paper covers her development as a law student and individual according to the student development theories of Chickering’s Seven Vectors of Identity Development, Gilligan’s Theory of Women’s Moral Development, and Baxter Magolda’s Self-Authorship Theory. As a result of her growth, Elle Woods flourishes into a confident, …
Food Insecurity For The Immigrant Population During The Novel Coronavirus-19, Bridget Gallagher
Food Insecurity For The Immigrant Population During The Novel Coronavirus-19, Bridget Gallagher
The Graduate Review
The novel Coronavisur-19 (COVID-19) has caused s widespread loss of life in the United States and globally and wrought enormous changes to our culture and lives. COVID-19 also has caused and intensified food insecurity, especially for immigrants. The pandemic has made visible and exacerbated longstanding problems of food insecurity and hunger in America. This paper suggests several approaches to mitigating food insecurity. Focusing on the immigrant community, the author argues that we can reduce hunger by reexamining and reinvigorating existing community resources and practical strategies, including neighborhood ethnic food stores, community gardens, advocacy, and outreach programs; and by enlisting specific …

The Massachusetts Educator Evaluation System And Teacher Perceptions Of Professional Growth, Craig Goldberg
The Massachusetts Educator Evaluation System And Teacher Perceptions Of Professional Growth, Craig Goldberg
The Graduate Review
Teacher evaluation has gained wide-spread attention and implementation in recent decades. In 2011, the State of Massachusetts adopted new regulations for the evaluation of all teachers designed to assist in developing talented educators through self-directed analysis, reflection, planning, action steps, and collaboration. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of Massachusetts State mandated teacher evaluation on teacher perceptions of professional growth. In this study, professional growth refers to reflecting on feedback from observations as well as formative and summative meetings with evaluators to adjust practice in the classroom. Specifically, the development of a teacher’s professional growth includes …
The Effectiveness Of Retrospective Miscue Analysis As A Reading Intervention For A Secondary Functional Academic Student, Drew Cumming
The Effectiveness Of Retrospective Miscue Analysis As A Reading Intervention For A Secondary Functional Academic Student, Drew Cumming
The Graduate Review
"Jack" is a ninth-grade functional academics student with multiple disabilities. His oral intelligibility can be challenging for unfamiliar listeners, but his expressive vocabulary is actually very strong for a student his age. Jack most recently scored below the 10th percentile among same-aged peers on standardized fluency and pseudoword-decoding tests but scored above the top 90th percentile on tests of receptive vocabulary and listening comprehension. Considering this vast discrepancy between subskills, it can be hard to determine when his below-grade-level reading performance has been disrupted by intellectual challenges, by a lack of confidence, or by a lack of motivation, or perhaps …
The Effect Of Project-Based Poetry Writing Intervention On Writing Attitudes Among Students With Severe Learning Disabilities, John M. Bonanni
The Effect Of Project-Based Poetry Writing Intervention On Writing Attitudes Among Students With Severe Learning Disabilities, John M. Bonanni
The Graduate Review
Writing attitudes of three learners with severe disabilities were surveyed in a substantially separate special education classroom within a public school in Massachusetts in order to determine the effect on learners’ writing attitudes after a project-based creative writing intervention in poetry. Writing skills were measured using teacher-created rubrics and attitudes were measured using pre and post survey data. Primary diagnoses of students involved included Intellectual Impairment, Autism, and Traumatic Brain Injury. Findings indicated that the intervention was most successful for the student with autism, moderately successful for the student with Traumatic Brain Injury, and not successful for the student with …

Disparities In U.S. Elementary And Secondary Public Education, Myhanh D. Barrette
Disparities In U.S. Elementary And Secondary Public Education, Myhanh D. Barrette
The Graduate Review
Educational disparities in America’s elementary and secondary public education are illustrated by official statistics on school readiness in young children, per pupil expenditures, high school graduation rates, standardized test scores, advanced courses enrollment, high school dropout rates, school disciplinary actions, and college entrance and completion rates. The astounding disproportionate difference in achievement (or lack thereof) between Black and minority students compared to their White counterparts raises alarming concerns regarding two important aspects of public education: equal access and equal quality. This paper attempts to understand our society’s view of education throughout the nation’s history in order to analyze important public …
"The Only Reason I Read" And Other Apologies: A Roadmap For Increased Pleasure Reading In The High School, Anne Smith
"The Only Reason I Read" And Other Apologies: A Roadmap For Increased Pleasure Reading In The High School, Anne Smith
The Graduate Review
Recent trends in adolescents’ reading habits suggest that as students enter middle and high school, their interest as well as their engagement in pleasure reading decreases. Educators and administrators alike are concerned by the statistics, which suggest that readers are lost early in their formal education. Many studies correlate low levels of reading to lower performance on academic tasks as well as decreased economic success in adulthood. Conversely, studies correlate higher levels of reading, especially daily reading, to substantial academic gains as well as increased economic success. Many educators have attacked the problem of losing readers during their adolescent years …
A Dangerous Game: The Dehumanization Of Children In Massachusetts Testing And Data Discourse, Gregory Shea
A Dangerous Game: The Dehumanization Of Children In Massachusetts Testing And Data Discourse, Gregory Shea
The Graduate Review
A great deal has been written about the ills of standardized testing, most of which focuses on their lack of validity and negative impacts on students. One topic that has not been explored in depth is the ways in which the discourse around testing can dehumanize public school students. This paper turns its attention to utterances of the Massachusetts Commissioner of Education, Mitchell Chester, along with the utterances of the superintendents of two large urban districts in Massachusetts. The thesis of this discourse analysis is that the words of these administrators betray an unconscious but troubling ideology of dehumanization. The …

Artist’s Statement:
My work is a result of my personal experiences as a woman. It is a reflection and interpretation of time and place. My intention is to convey an idea based on memories and the passage of time. Curriculum Decision-Making Processes Of Beginning Special Education Teachers, Camille Schulman
Curriculum Decision-Making Processes Of Beginning Special Education Teachers, Camille Schulman
The Graduate Review
Teachers are constantly making decisions in their classrooms based on a variety of factors. With a sample of twelve first or second year special education teachers, this participatory action research project explores the decision-making processes in regards to curriculum development. Using group interviews, individual interviews, participant content maps, and a survey, data examining the decisions these teachers make about curriculum in their classroom was collected. These qualitative and quantitative data sets will be coded, analyzed, and compared to identify common elements and themes among participants. Preliminary results show that teachers struggle on a daily basis with different aspects of curriculum …
