Service learning is a method of instruction that integrates volunteerism, as well as reflection, in the classroom. The purpose of this article is, therefore, to describe the implementation and design of a pre-practicum service learning experience into an Introduction to School Counseling course. The authors describe the empirically grounded design of the service learning experience, as well as the course goals, how it was integrated into the class, and a summary of student experiences.

This essay explores how higher education’s move away from the liberal arts tradition of learning by thinking and towards more vocational “experiential” approaches has implications for media literacy educators’ career options, scholarly identities, and teaching strategies. Specifically, I consider my own negotiation of increasing administrative and student demands for “hands-on” production courses by confessing both my advantages on the job market and my post-hire challenges in articulating a clear research agenda. Using Song Lyrics To Enhance Counselor Trainee Perceptions Of Their Reflective Listening Skills, Eric Davis, Jennifer Pereira

This qualitative study explored counseling student perceptions of the use of song lyrics to practice reflective listening skills. Student perceptions included reactions to a creative technique, increased confidence in reflective skills, applicability of skills, and potential issues with this activity. Results, implications for counselor education, and future research are explored.
