Utilizing A Critical Literacy Framework To Discuss Issues Of Power And Privilege With Elementary Students, Barbara A. Pollard

This action research study utilizes a critical literacy framework to bring issues of privilege and power into critical dialogue with elementary students. The study is based on the idea that disadvantaged groups can eventually agitate for societal change if they are prompted to begin to critically question systemic inequalities from a young age. Thus, instead of allowing dominant culture to dictate unfair norms and practices by simply abiding to the status quo, this study suggests that elementary teachers should aim to be the vehicle for transformational change by implementing pedagogy that encourages students to think deeply and critically. Disrupting Dis/Abilization: A Critical Exploration Of Research Methods To Combat White Supremacy And Ableism In Education, Sara H. Petit-Mcclure, Chelsea Stinson

Intersections: Critical Issues in Education

The following paper explores the way scientific research, as it is commonly defined, has been used to continue the marginalization and subsequent dis/abilization of students based on racial, cultural, and linguistic identities. Starting with a historical perspective, we trace the role of scientific research in the support of white supremacist, ableist societal mechanisms, as well as the emphasis on scientifically-based research in educational policy and practice. We call for an expansion of the definition of scientific research to emphasize mixed and multiple methods guided by the principles of participatory, emancipatory, and decolonizing methodologies.

Book Review: The Anti-Oppressive Role Of Inclusive Mathematics In Global South And Global North Educational Contexts, Alexis C. Padilla

Intersections: Critical Issues in Education

This book review engages critically with selected essays contained in the 2019 volume titled Inclusive Mathematics Education: State-of-the-Art Research from Brazil and Germany. The review showcases ways in which these essays, particularly those written by global south mathematics education scholars, illustrate anti-oppressive modes of enacting inclusive equity for students with dis/abilities. This dynamic enactment is accomplished by disrupting ableist narratives and practices as well as by interrogating normalcy and coloniality paradigms toward crafting spaces of resistance and hope in intersectional spheres of solidarity.

Drawing on interviews, ethnographic observations, and survey data, the author examines the ways teachers, administrators, and policy makers conceptualize and influence school environments for students of all genders. This article engages queer studies in education and disability theory to analyze the inclusion of trans* students in schools. Looking at the implementation of the New York City Department of Education’s Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Student Guidelines in K-12 schools, the author questions how we can understand and address the gap between educational practice and policy to create schools that are inclusive of trans* students.
