Service learning (or community engaged learning) is a rapidly growing form of experiential education that results in mutually beneficial partnerships between students, institutions and local communities. SL (or CEL) is well-developed at European universities, and a variety of networks exist to further SL as a pedagogy. We examined how a range of universities consider SL a part of their institutional missions, and if explicit connections were made between SL and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (a universal framework of 17 goals to achieve by 2030) and the university’s third mission (an orientation toward the public good). Partnerships between universities and community organizations contribute to sustainable community development by creating networks of resources that may not otherwise exist among university faculty, students and community members. Service learning serves as a vessel for connecting and strengthening these resources; however, barriers within universities limit effective practice. University faculty members often cite time constraints, coordination challenges, and lack of support as deterrents to the incorporation of service learning projects in their courses. Exploration of the history, education theory, practical application, and ongoing results from the Woodring College of Education FACET program. The Learning in Communities and Schools (LinCS) office has collaborated with FACET, Shuksan Middle School, and Alderwood Elementary School to pilot an immersive interdisciplinary pre-service education program that strives to develop critically conscious family and community engaged educators who, in partnership, foster the potential and well-being of all children and youth in the context of their lives. The LinCS office has helped to implement and assess this program in its initial years.

This poster will illustrate the student engaged experience utilized by Kansas State University for its Multicultural Student Center. It will delineate the campus "community" partnership and the empowerment process initiated by the multicultural student organizations that led to the preliminary building design and fundraising strategies by the University. It will also address how multiple communities in a university can engage in a creative, collaborative process that not only fosters inclusion but also student learning. Ultimately, it shows how student collaboration with University Administration can result in both intended and unexpected outcomes for all involved, especially impacts for beyond stated expectations.

In many communities, there are few opportunities for children with disabilities to participate in engaging summer camp experiences. This poster will highlight one successful endeavor that provided this much-needed opportunity to children with disabilities. Little has been explored regarding how parents go about preparing their children for the camp experience that is to come; and few studies have documented the planning and preparation by camp staff. This presentation will explore one family’s efforts to prepare and support a child’s first venture into organized summer programming. Disrupting The Hegemony Of Choice: Community Service Learning In Activist Placements, Donna M. Chovanec, Tania Kajner, Ayesha Mian, Misty Unverwood

In this paper, we share insights from a research project that investigated the effects of a service learning experience in a graduate adult education seminar with an explicitly critical pedagogical focus and activist placements. We analyze a subset of the findings related to the lack of “choice” through a critique of CSL as a market commodity and argue that disrupting the hegemony of choice had implications for reconstructing student identities.
