Learners’ Perspectives On The Use And Support Of Student Created Video Assignments At James Madison University, Annette Bruff Liskey
Showcase of Graduate Student Scholarship and Creative Activities
This research is an exploratory analysis of the use of student created video assignments at JMU, a pedagogical strategy that is increasingly common but not widely researched. The study collected quantitative data via an online survey of JMU students with the objective of examining the use, design, and outcomes of student created video assignments at James Madison University. Survey topics included the requirements of the assignment, the course that included the assignment, resources available and/or used to complete the assignment, students’ perceptions of the learning outcomes, as well as non-identifying information about each respondent’s demographics and academic experience at JMU. …

Is Your Library Ready For The Reality Of Virtual Reality? What You Need To Know And Why It Belongs In Your Library, Carl R. Grant, Stephen Rhind-Tutt
Charleston Library Conference
VR is no longer just gaming. It’s increasingly being deployed across academic campuses and is becoming indispensable in fields ranging from the humanities to engineering to anthropology. A recent survey indicated that 100% of ARL campuses were using VR, with 40% of libraries actively supporting it. This paper discusses practical examples of how libraries are helping their institutions build out virtual reality, utilizing 3D objects and explains why the library is the best place to do so. It provides a basic grounding in VR and related areas, showing what it is and why it's important to libraries. Specific attention is …
Textbooks Are Expensive, But Oer Can Be Challenging: Providing E-Textbook Access Through The Library, Brian W. Boling, Karen Kohn
Textbooks Are Expensive, But Oer Can Be Challenging: Providing E-Textbook Access Through The Library, Brian W. Boling, Karen Kohn
Charleston Library Conference
Research has shown that textbook costs are rising. Open educational resources (OER), though increasingly popular, are not available for all courses and can be difficult to adopt, particularly for contingent faculty. In response to the textbook crisis and the limitations of OER, Temple University has sought alternative ways to provide textbook access to students. We have promoted OER through a grant program since 2011 and offer a website to expose assigned readings that the Libraries own in e-book format. In 2018, the Libraries also began purchasing e-textbooks. The campus bookstore sends a list of assigned books each semester. We review …

Charleston Library Conference
This is an exciting and challenging time for libraries. Libraries are incorporating eBooks into their acquisition, discovery and access environment to satisfy the needs of users. Users want convenience, flexibility and functionality. The ecosystem of eBooks involves a chain of events that leads from the publishing house to the user. eBooks provide diversity for users in which they can checkout, download, search, save, print, email and cite content on their electronic devices without leaving the comfort of their easy chair. Opportunities and complexities exist for stakeholders in the eBook ecosystem. Libraries, publishers, content providers and vendors find themselves challenged by …

Applied Health Sciences
Many applied science programs such as exercise science include prerequisite courses in the basic sciences to provide students with knowledge of foundational principles as well as provide transfer pathways from biology. However, when students begin exercise science coursework, their perceptions are that these courses should be easier, expecting lower effort and higher academic grades. These mismatched perceptions often lead to academic frustration. To determine the validity of the perceptions of high vs. low academic effort and academic …

Florida Statewide Symposium: Best Practices in Undergraduate Research
The Office of Undergraduate Research at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University for the past seven years has offered a short-term research abroad program to allow students to have an international experience while being introduced to research. This past year the program was not feasible due to low student interest. The program was revamped to a research grant to encourage students who are participating in an ERAU faculty-led study abroad program to add a research component to their experience. Come find out how one program was revamped to meet the needs of the current students while still achieving the desired programmatic outcomes.

Ethics And Methods Of Human Rights Work: Exploring Both Theoretical And Practical Approaches, Shayna Plaut, Maritza Felices Luna, Christina Clark Kazak, Neil Bilotta, Lara Rosenoff Gauvin
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
This workshop will explore both theoretical and practical approaches to methodologies and ethics as it relates to human rights work.
The goal of the workshop is to create a dynamic space that encourages participants to share and learn from our own experiences navigating the messiness of human rights ethics and methods. We specifically address formal education and systems and structures so that we may all design, do and teach research and practice related to human rights in a more critical and sustainable manner. We recognize the tensions of creating research, programs and advocacy that is seen as “legitimate” to educational …

The Campus Human Rights Index: Measuring University Commitment To Human Rights, Charles Crabtree, Volha Chykina, Kiyoteru Tsutsui, Michelle Bellino
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
To what extent do universities respect human rights? Despite the prevailing view that universities are bastions of progressive ideas with a bias for rights protection, anecdotal evidence suggests that they diverge significantly in their commitment to promote and protect human rights, even within the U.S. To this point, though, there exists no systematic measure of university human rights commitments. In this manuscript, we introduce the first such indicator - the Campus Human Rights Index (CHRI). We describe the measure and introduce our initial ranking of universities. We then formally assess the construct validity of our measure by comparing it to …

Obstacles To Excellence: Academic Freedom And China's Quest For World-Class Universities, Chelsea Blackburn Cohen
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
China’s government has made significant investments to develop universities that already compete with the world’s best. Their progress has captured global attention over the years, with universities around the world forging partnerships with institutions in the People’s Republic of China (PRC), and scholars and students around the world flocking to study, teach, and research in the country. But while China continues to stoke its ambitions for developing more world-class universities, respect for academic freedom and other human rights essential to quality higher education lags behind, leaving scholars and students at risk, and the country’s goals in balance.
With the recent …

Moving from a teacher-centered classroom to a student-centered classroom creates a “teacher paradox,” because on the surface, the teacher appears to become the least important person in the classroom. But in transitioning from a “sage on the stage” to a “guide on the side” (while team teaching with a fleet of classroom computers), the teacher’s impact on the lives of the students is actually enhanced. How does one design units of instruction that are student-centered? Come and find out how one high school teacher has attempted to pull this off.

Development And Evaluation Of A Hybrid Adi/Swh Model Pre-Laboratory Curriculum, Tabitha Alitz, Dawn Del Carlo
Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium
Previous Research:
• Students value each part of the pre-lab differently, struggle to connect all of the components, and therefore fail to see the big picture
• Students find the pre-lab moderately helpful in understanding both the concepts and mechanics of the lab, but find it less helpful at the end of the semester compared to beginning
• The cognitive load demands of the SWH pre-lab hinders students’ ability to participate in authentic scientific inquiry

Supporting Lgbtq+ Survivors On Campus, Molly Sapia, Ethan Levine, Phd
Title IX Summit
Back by popular demand, last year's Supporting LGBTQ+ Survivors on Campus has been revamped for the new state of Title IX. Historically, Title IX protections have provided a much-needed resource for addressing sexual violence on campus. However, the benefits of Title IX may not apply equally to all students in practice. This workshop will discuss how the history of Title IX raises questions about its applicability for all sexual violence, and ultimately explore strategies for addressing sexual violence in lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer (LGBTQ+) communities. How effectively does Title IX address same-sex violence? What other policy and programmatic …

Legal Foundations Of College Judicial Processes, Laura Valente, Ed.D.
Title IX Summit
Many staff members working within the realm of Title IX come to this work through student support functions and may not have a solid foundation of the key legal concepts around college judicial systems. Understanding what is required in all student conduct cases will assist in providing the best possible Title IX adjudication processes. This workshop will examine: Constitutional rights for students at public institutions; Contractual considerations at both private and public institutions; Key Supreme Court decisions; Federal Statutes (ADA, Title IX, Section 504, Civil Rights Act, FERPA). Participants will have the opportunity to learn the requirements guiding the adjudication …

Title IX Summit
Students are spending more time online than ever before and sexual misconduct now traverses both the physical and digital worlds. This workshop will review three mediums of cyber sexual misconduct; camming, sextortion, and revenge porn. We will review conceptual definitions, the digital tools used by college students, online vernacular, and Title IX implications including implications from coercion in cyber sexual misconduct. We will conclude by reviewing best practices for evidence collection in these complex cases. This topic is pressing as recent studies show that at least 33% of college aged students participate in sexting and that of those who receive …
