Challenges And Successes In Exposing Community College Students To Field Work And Undergraduate Research In A New Introductory Field Biology Course At The College Of Southern Nevada, Brian C. Wainscott
American Association for the Advancement of Science Pacific Conference
Few of the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) students I interact with consider careers in field biology. When asked why, most report they do not know much about field biology because too few opportunities exist. Knowing this, and the importance of attracting students to STEM careers, I solicited input from potential employers and developed a new course called Introduction to Field Biology (BIOL 211). BIOL 211 was approved by the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) during 2012 and I offered it for the first time during the spring semester of 2013. It is a 4-credit lecture/lab course that meets …

Issues And Challenges In The Development Of Open Access Publishing And Scholarly Communications In Nigeria, Ifeoma Ann Oluwasemilore
American Association for the Advancement of Science Pacific Conference
The paper notes that advances in technology have resulted in the emergence of open access publishing and scholarly communication. Open access publishing typically provides an internet based digital platform for the publication of research output with unrestricted access to the public while scholarly publication networks encompass inter linked information access to database by educational institutions. The growth of open access publishing and scholarly communication has been very remarkable in many developed countries. However, academic and research institutions in many developing countries like Nigeria are still battling to overcome many challenges in an attempt to make their research outputs openly accessible. …

- Open access publishing is providing a meaningful option to researchers and libraries outside of the traditional subscription model of publishing.
- With the entrance of traditional publishers and government/funder mandates, one can assume that the model is sustainable and here to stay.
- Because of funding issues, OA may work better in some disciplines than in others.
- OA will continue to grow and morph into new forms.
- OA is one of many viable responses to the challenges we face in disseminating the results of research.

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking
The theory of planned behaviour (TPB) and the concept of anticipatory negative emotions have attracted considerable research attention in the formulation of effective preventive interventions. This approach has identified several key constructs (i.e., attitudes, subjective norms, perceptions of control, anticipation of negative emotions) as valid predictors of gambling intentions and behaviour. However, no empirical investigation has utilized these constructs in the design or evaluation of a youth problem gambling prevention initiative.
Objectives. The current research aims to assess the effects of a prevention video on gambling-related attitudes, subjective norms, control perceptions, anticipated negative emotions, and intentions. The video focuses on …

Interdisciplinary Research Scholarship Day
Competing demands of work, family, friends, and the academic rigor while in an accelerated baccalaureate nursing program often lead to high levels of anxiety and may contribute to unsuccessful student progression. This phenomena is not unique to the UNLV School of Nursing but is an issue that nursing programs grapple with nationwide. While there is nursing research literature related to student success programs there are limited studies that describe the use of a Student Success Facilitator (SSF) coupled with a Student to Student Mentoring Program (SSMP). Effectiveness Of A Reference Accuracy Strategy For Faculty Scholarship, Kirsten Speck, Barbara St. Pierre Schneider,
Interdisciplinary Research Scholarship Day
The dissemination of scholarly information through scholarly publishing is one of the most important requirements to be successful in academia. Approximately 25-45% of nursing scholarship has at least one reference error. Reference inaccuracy occurs in scholarly publishing because most faculty authors focus more on the writing than on the accuracy of the references or these authors inadvertently miss the reference errors. Nevertheless, inaccurate references hinder the retrieval of material if author names are misspelled or the year or volume number is incorrect. Also, this lack of precision can raise questions about the accuracy of other parts of the material and …
The Effects Of Climate Science Literacy And Cultural Polarization Around Climate Change Risk Perception, Gabriel R. Young, Helen R. Neill
The Effects Of Climate Science Literacy And Cultural Polarization Around Climate Change Risk Perception, Gabriel R. Young, Helen R. Neill
Graduate Research Symposium (GCUA) (2010 - 2017)
Science communicators have struggled to provide meaningful information about climate change due to the complex nature of the problem and the polarized political and media landscapes, and yet, a well informed public is a crucial element to both public acceptance and policy initiatives aimed at climate change mitigation. Current literature suggests that scientific literacy actually increases cultural polarization around the issue of climate change (Kahan, 2012). This study adds to the literature by testing the hypothesis that climate change risk perception is more heavily tied to climate science literacy than general science literacy when controlling for cultural worldviews. We use …

States And Multicultural Education Policies: A Multinomial Logit Analysis, Leander D. Kellogg
Graduate Research Symposium (GCUA) (2010 - 2017)
This research evaluates the factors that facilitate or constrain the adoption of multicultural education policies in the fifty US state at the state legislature and state bureaucracy levels. According to the 2010 Census, the majority of children under age two—for the first time in US history—are minorities. Furthermore, 11 states and the District of Columbia already have a “minority-majority” population of children under age five. Seven more states are expected to join them in the next decade. Previous research has found that multicultural education policies have been increasingly adopted but are not yet widespread across the states. This study first …

Juror Typologies And Dna Comprehension:Who Benefits From Jury Trial Innovations?, Mari Sakiyama, Joel D. Lieberman
Graduate Research Symposium (GCUA) (2010 - 2017)
When DNA evidence is presented in the courtroom, it is typically accompanied by complex testimony conveying information such as the method of generating population frequencies, match criteria and probabilities, as well as laboratory errors and error rates. Although this evidence may have high probative value, the legal community has expressed growing concern regarding jurors’ ability to comprehend it. However, courts have implemented a variety of jury trial innovations to facilitate jurors’ ability to process complex information. Although these innovations may have a positive effect on comprehension of complex trial evidence, it is unclear whether some jurors are more likely to …
