The book From Program to Practice: Purpose, Empowerment, and Persistence in Doctoral Education is a collection of graduate student writings from the 2022 summer Education Doctorate Residency at Winona State University.
"As practitioners in education and adjacent fields embark upon their journeys toward earning a doctorate, they soon realize the importance of this collection’s theme: the intersection of purpose, empowerment, and persistence (PEP). These concepts prove critical to a student’s success at all stages of the doctoral process, from program admission, to topic exploration, to graduation. The essays in this collection explore how students define, identify, and leverage “PEP” as …

Journey “Box” Assignment Description, David Wolff
Open Educational Resources - Teaching and Learning
The Journey “Box” allows preservice teachers to explore and share their own historical narrative as they different aspects of their own family’s journey to America. The Journey “Box” first asks preservice teachers to explore themes by reading children’s literature and then positions preservice teachers as interviewers as they seek out different facets of their family’s historical narrative from members of their family. Preservice teachers then use their experience with a Journey “Box” to design an inquiry that could be used in their field experience. The Journey “Box” integrates social studies standards and best practices with ELA standards.

Walking The Walk: Culturally Responsive Practices In Augmentative Alternative Communication, Aaron M. Doubet
2022 Projects
For many Americans, the ability to communicate effortlessly is an impossibility. For these individuals, the provision of Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) is of utmost importance. This current pilot study addressed the cultural representations present within stock AAC systems. The pilot study focused on two research questions: If I quantitatively and qualitatively analyze the iconography of AAC systems, in what ways, if any, will the information inform the researcher of potential cultural mismatches evident within the factory stock iconographic programming? If I analyze AAC devices using a deductive qualitative coding scheme, in what ways, if any, will this inform the researcher …

In the 20 years since its development, the Let Me Learn Process® has been implemented in over 75 grade pre-Kindergarten through 12 schools in the United States. Creating The Back Ward: The Triumph Of Custodialism And The Uses Of Therapeutic Failure In Nineteenth Century Idiot Asylums, Philip M. Ferguson
Education Faculty Books and Book Chapters
"My focus in this chapter is on the origin of the back ward rather than its demise. Where did the “back wards” that [Burton] Blatt and [Senator Robert] Kennedy witnessed come from in the first place? What 3 exactly were those “antecedents of the problems observed” that Blatt cited? This chapter reviews that history and argues that, in fact, there is a specific narrative to the evolution of the institutional “back ward” as an identifiable place where people with the most significant intellectual disabilities were to be incarcerated and largely forgotten."
