The problem of college student mortality and the prognosis of academic success have long intrigued school administrators and educational psychologists. The prediction of academic achievement remains a problem and the tremendous waste represented by the high percentage of drop-outs continues to pose a serious challenge to our institutions of higher education.

The problem with which this study was concerned was to determine what differences, measurable by the Thematic Apperception Test, exist between students who have been identified as successful in college and those who have been identified as unsuccessful.

Audio-visual education is a rapidly developing area of education in California. This tremendous growth would in itself preclude using criteria for evaluating audio-visual services which did not adjust to the growth of the program.

The problem of this thesis is the result of this changing situation. For many years students have been placed in algebra and mathematics courses in the junior high schools of Santa Rosa on the basis of teacher judgment. intelligence test scores, achievement test scores, and prognostic test scores. Counselors have placed these students in the courses on the basis of their judgment of the above factors. Very little experimental evidence has been presented to weigh the relative importance of the factors which are of prime consideration in the placement of pupils.
