This Masters project consists of two elements: 1) an integrated after-school program to improve student English language reading and academic outcomes for third graders' vocabulary development by incorporating music, artistic creativity and linguistics; 2) a pilot sample curriculum that demonstrates the approach for building student comprehension through musical theater and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) content experiences. The purpose of this ethnographic study is to examine the lived experiences of students attending a predominately Latino urban high school in the southwest region of the United States, using interviews, focus groups, and observations to gain an insight on student engagement and disengagement from school. Riverview High School was selected as the prime site for exploring student engagement based mainly on the poor student population of color, low school retention rate, and high suspension rate. The purpose of this project was to understand the qualitative effects of bullying. This research project used archival data collected from a counselor at a high school in Auckland, New Zealand. The data collected included stories of the victims participating in an anti-bullying intervention program called "Undercover Teams". The purpose of the analysis is to illustrate the intensity of the effects of bullying, as voiced by the victims. The purpose of this study was to reexamine the Goldberg Paradigm and the Gender Role Congruity Theory in the academic setting. The present study was interested in examining the attitudes of both male and female evaluators in the college setting. The presented study also predicted that the self-evaluations of the participants would vary due to the application they evaluated. The study manipulated gender and major (math, business, English literature, and art) as independent variables in the mock applications. Data was collected from undergraduate students. After reading the mock applications, participants would complete a survey.

The goal of this study was to evaluate how metacognition (knowledge or cognitive process that monitors or controls cognition) helps to predict training outcomes through learning adaptation. Participants were 117 students from California University San Bernardino (CSUSB). The purpose of this study is to explore, through semi-structured interviews, public school educators' perspectives on how they interpret and cope/deal with the current high-stakes educational climate. This qualitative study explores how teachers interpret and negotiate top-down mandates and the effects of such mandates on self-efficacy, professional autonomy, and stress. It also investigates what sources of inspiration and/or support perceived by teachers as helpful in cultivating resilience. Semi-structured interviews with seven public elementary school teachers in a Southern California district served as the primary sources of data.

This thesis aims to investigate the issues surrounding California's Proposition 227, an important language policy passed in June of 1998 which drastically limited bilingual education. This proposition requires that all public school systems be in English only. Using a method known as Critical Discourse Analysis, this study exposes the underlying bias embedded in the discourse of newspaper articles from: the Los Angeles Times, the Orange County Register, and the Sacramento Bee. Theorists have long spoken of solving the teacher-student contradiciton, but many teachers in practice find it difficult to create depolarized classrooms, classrooms in which the roles of teacher and student overlap. One way to create such classrooms, composition teachers have advocated small-group workshops (SGWs) since the late 1960's. SGWs have become a well-established and researched part of composition theory. Compositionists have largely ignored SGW's counterpart, the whole-class workshop (WCW) despite it's benefits. This thesis examines WCWs as a new solution to the teacher-student contradiction and thus add a study of WCWs to composition scholarship.

This study will look at at how to better student achievement in an Algebra II course. Specifically this study examines two different modifications made during the second semester of an Algebra II course taught at a high school in Riverside County.
