The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of the Time Travelers Leadership Program, an after school intervention program, on non-thriving seventh graders' Developmental Assets, academic achievement, and behavior. Schools are facing the unprecedented challenge to educate a multicultural and multilingual student body with varied abilities and motivations for learning, and research on promotion and prevention programs that address positive youth development constructs are promising in improving students' school success.

The grade level at which an adolescent started middle school, 5th-grade (n = 40) or 7th-grade (n = 40) did not statistically significantly impact 8th-grade students' achievement, behavior or high school preparedness in this study. Regardless of middle school start points all 8th-grade students performed within the fourth to sixth stanines on a national norm-referenced test, solidly within the average range with mean core grade point averages ranging from a C+ (2.53) to a B (3.11). However, consistent with national findings all middle school start point groups demonstrated statistically significant declines in normal curve equivalences between pretest 5th-grade to posttest …

This study evaluated the achievement and social involvement of students who completed eight years of public school Montessori Academic Instruction (n = 31) to determine their current levels of 10th-grade transition adjustment into a traditional high school program, compared to the achievement and social involvement of randomly selected students from the same school district who completed eight years of General Education Academic Instruction (n = 31) before entering high school.
