Culturally Responsive Education, The Panopticon, And Cultural Wall: A White Teacher’S Reflection On Identity, Cynthia M. Douglas
Race and Pedagogy Journal: Teaching and Learning for Justice
The dynamics of White teacher identity are analyzed through the tenets of Foucault's Panopticon, as a physical and metaphorical structure for knowledge and power. The Panopticon illustrates the complex manifestation of White vigilance and societal position permeating even teacher identity. This study delineates a White teacher’s identity and the unconscious barrier, cultural wall, that impedes full consideration of their identity and their ability to connect with culturally and linguistically diverse students. This study serves to add to current literature to promote dialogue about the need for better pre-service and professional development regarding reflective practices for teachers working with multilingual and …

Conversations About Race Between Educators And K-12 Students, Elana Wolkoff, Ronda Goodale
Race and Pedagogy Journal: Teaching and Learning for Justice
Conversations about race between teachers and K-12 students have been found to improve racial attitudes for students of all races and to serve as a protective factor for students of color. This study examines perspectives of educators and youth in regard to these conversations, obstacles that impede them and factors that increase positive outcomes. Eighty-nine educators and 130 youth completed questionnaires that included multiple choice and open response questions. Samples were diverse in regard to race and geographic region within the US. Using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis, researchers found that these conversations generally have positive outcomes and often strengthen …
Race And The Holocaust: Giving Voice To Diverse Learners, Rebecca T. Dupas
Race And The Holocaust: Giving Voice To Diverse Learners, Rebecca T. Dupas
Race and Pedagogy Journal: Teaching and Learning for Justice
As American student populations grow increasingly more diverse, educators must find ways to promote Holocaust relevancy and honor the voice and experience of learners. While some scholars and educators continue to make a case for a particularist approach to teaching about the Holocaust, a universalist approach is the only of the two to intentionally provide space for diverse groups to find relevancy. This article explores how racial diversity in American classrooms call for teaching that honors the uniqueness of the Holocaust while acknowledging a teacher’s own positioning and the experiences of learners. It explains the author's race and connection to …
Is Academics Inclusive?, Anoop Gupta
Is Academics Inclusive?, Anoop Gupta
Race and Pedagogy Journal: Teaching and Learning for Justice
The following question was discussed, “Is academics inclusive?” The method was archival and autoethnographic. Immanuel Kant’s racist views were discussed in relation to his ethics, for the purpose of considering how biographical material could shed light on understanding his ethics. In addition, the author focused upon their own experience as a racialized Canadian student from about 1989 to 2002, about 12 years, cumulating in a doctorate, specializing in the philosophy of mathematics, and further work he did in the social sciences, thereafter, leading to another doctorate in educational studies and sessional work. Finally, some suggestions are offered to make academics …

Evaluating The Efficacy Of Multicultural Education Programs At Reducing Anti-Muslim Prejudice On College Campuses, Amin Asfari
Race and Pedagogy Journal: Teaching and Learning for Justice
Colleges and universities are becoming increasingly aware of the need to foster more diverse and inclusive spaces. The present study sought to investigate the effectiveness of Multicultural Education Programs (MEP) at a large research university in the Southeastern United States. Whereas prior research evaluated such programs, none have examined their effect in reducing anti- Muslim sentiment, which has been on the rise since 9/11, and more recently throughout the presidency of Donald J. Trump. Using a quasi-experimental independent group posttest design, students from two groups (MEP and non-MEP) were surveyed to examine the effects of the MEP in reducing anti-Muslim …
Racializing Service (Learning): A Critical Content Analysis Of Service Learning Syllabi, Tania Mitchell, Carmine Perrotti
Racializing Service (Learning): A Critical Content Analysis Of Service Learning Syllabi, Tania Mitchell, Carmine Perrotti
Race and Pedagogy Journal: Teaching and Learning for Justice
This study examines service learning pedagogy and its use of racialized terms to frame service. Through a critical content analysis using 270 syllabi from 193 four-year U.S. institutions with the Community Engagement Classification from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, this study explores how the language used in service learning syllabi perpetuates and sustains racialized hierarchies in community engagement experiences.
