The purpose of this school improvement plan was designed based on first-hand experience in seeing the high need for social-emotional learning skills among middle school students. Research findings show that a social-emotional curriculum provides students with many beneficial skills and supports to self-regulate and respond appropriately to anguish and trauma. The findings also explicitly conclude that when implementing a social-emotional curriculum each step of the process is crucial to the positive outcome of the program. With these research findings in mind, a school improvement plan was created to promote sustainable implementation within the middle school setting.

Adverse childhood experiences are defined as potentially traumatic events that occur before the age of 17 and include experiences such as violence or abuse in the home, substance abuse or mental health problems of a direct caretaker, neglect, incarceration of a parent, divorce, and other events that can negatively affect a child's sense of safety and stability in their home. Teachers use social-emotional learning (SEL) practices to help teach students strategies to self-regulate inside the classroom. The practice of mindfulness is an SEL strategy that can be implemented through the use of a classroom calm-down corner to help classroom behaviors. This action research studied the impact of a calm down corner in the primary classroom. Participants included the researcher's class of 23 second-grade students. Students participated in daily mini-lessons for strategies to use in the calm down corner. Data was collected on student behavior and usage of the calm down corner through observations. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are traumatic events that occur from infancy through teenage years. Research shows that students who have been exposed to one ACE have a greater chance of experiencing more traumatic events in their lifetime. Students with ACEs are at a greater percentage to struggle with behaviors, academics, health concerns, and poor school attendance. Schools are researching and training teachers to implement interventions to support children exposed to trauma. Teachers who are purposeful with their classroom environment to support students’ needs and create a safe classroom environment for students exposed to ACEs.

This literature review explores the research of what makes a trauma-informed school and what interventions are effective in implementing trauma-informed teaching practices to help students with past traumatic experiences become more success in school. Research documents a large number of students who have experienced trauma and that this trauma has a significant impact on a child’s development, both cognitive and social. Teachers and schools are at the forefront of this problem and ideally suited to address this problem. This literature review revealed key areas to focus when implementing trauma-informed teaching practices. These include relationships, resiliency, and climate and culture.
