This paper describes a fluency intervention plan for an at-risk group of third graders in Newton, Iowa. The components of a good fluency intervention include repeated reading, motivation, peer involvement, and small group size. Utilizing research on these topics, the author created a fluency intervention to implement within a thirty-minute time period each day. This paper provides a timeline of specific changes that will be made to improve fluency scores for these students.

This action research was driven by the researcher’s interest in improving struggling reading students at the middle school level through a reading intervention course. The researcher used quantitative data through FastBridge CompEfficency to monitor the nine-week reading intervention course and evaluate students' progress weekly. The areas addressed in the intervention are reading comprehension skills of paraphrasing, main idea identification, summarizing, and inferencing. The researcher is a seventh-grade teacher in her sixth year of teaching reading classes and two reading intervention courses. The impact of COVID-19 has been detrimental to student success. School closings reduced learning for all students but especially for primary students who missed critical foundational skills. Tier II math interventions within the MTSS framework show evidence of growth for students of all ages and needs. This research-based approach is a logical response to combatting the damage caused by the pandemic. Several successful research studies on mathematics intervention will provide promise of replication in other schools. This paper explores the research looking at an intervention done with four preschool students with autism-like tendencies. Two of the students are on the autism spectrum and two students show autism-like tendencies and deficiencies. All four students struggled in social situations and play with their peers. The intervention provided for all four students was a checklist of skills needed to be successful in a social situation; group games, cooperative play and cleaning up.
