The Effects Of Intercollegiate Athletic Participation On Student Academic Achievement And Leadership Performance In A Selective Institution, Craig A. Yunker
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of various intensity levels of athletic participation on academic and leadership performance in a selective institution. For the purpose of this study a retrospective analysis of existing admissions and student performance data was conducted. The continuous dependent variables were academic and leadership performance scores. The categorical independent variables were the three intensity levels of athletic participation (high commitment athletes, moderate commitment athletes, general population students), gender and race. The subjects for this study included 4977 of the 4998 students that graduated from a selective institution from 1992 through 1996. Results …

Mexican Technological Universities : Pursuing Reform And New Public-Private Funding Mixes In A Non University Sector, Jorge Gamaliel Arenas-Basurto
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Although unstable funding of Mexico's public universities is a critical problem faced each year by these institutions that struggle to negotiate increments in their fiscal revenues, most public universities have still not been able to increase sizably their share of self generating revenues to mitigate, to some degree, the impact of public shortages. Different paths to financial reforms have been encouraged by Mexican authorities in order to modify the pervasive statist tradition in the funding of public universities. In the last decades, authorities have promoted funding tools aimed at modifying the incremental budgeting of most universities, encouraging them to diversify …
On The Fence Of Legitimacy : A Framework For Understanding And Assessing The Legitimacy Of New Academic Disciplines In U.S. Higher Education, Karin Diann Bump
On The Fence Of Legitimacy : A Framework For Understanding And Assessing The Legitimacy Of New Academic Disciplines In U.S. Higher Education, Karin Diann Bump
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Legitimacy is a concept frequently employed but rarely discussed in more than vague terms (Suchman1995, Hybels 1994). Consequently, this research seeks to develop a clearer understanding of the ways new disciplines become established within a sociological framework of legitimacy. Two theoretical models are used in this study through an approach that melds key aspects of each; the presence of three levels (Suchman 1995) and six sources (Boulding 1971) of legitimacy. Unique to Boulding's model is the purposeful inclusion of internal views of legitimacy as most discussions of legitimacy focus on external views.

A Survey Of School Psychology Faculty Members' Knowledge, Skills, And Attitudes Regarding Distance Education And Distance Education Technologies, Tonya C. Chacón
A Survey Of School Psychology Faculty Members' Knowledge, Skills, And Attitudes Regarding Distance Education And Distance Education Technologies, Tonya C. Chacón
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Research suggests that availability and use of distance education (DE) and distance education technologies (DET, i.e., technological applications) are growing at a prolific rate. Excitement over new technologies stems from their potential to develop new ways of teaching and learning. Yet, whereas the infrastructure necessary to support DE and DET exists, pedagogical applications have not kept pace. A major reason cited in the literature for limited use of DE and DET is mainstream faculty leadership and willingness to adopt these applications. While faculty members have expertise in content and pedagogy, DE and DET adoption may require greater technological competence. In …
An Examination Of Changes In Classroom Teacher Behaviors When Implementing An Individualized Behavior Support Plan For A Preschooler With Challenging Behavior, Cecile Gleason
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This embedded case study focused on the behavior and attitudes of four members of an early childhood teaching team carrying out a Behavior Support Plan (BSP) in a Head Start classroom. The investigator examined the extent to which teachers implemented the BSP, the relationship between teacher behaviors and changes in child behaviors, the extent to which teacher fidelity changed after coaching, teachers' views on the feasibility and value of the behavior strategies they were asked to carry out, and to what extent professional development supports for teachers were considered helpful. Research and experiences in the field have demonstrated that young …
White Institutional Presence : The Impact Of Whiteness On Campus Climate & The Relational Context Of White Institutional Presence, Diane Lynn Gusa
White Institutional Presence : The Impact Of Whiteness On Campus Climate & The Relational Context Of White Institutional Presence, Diane Lynn Gusa
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This dissertation purports to offer a new lens on the retention puzzle of African-Americans in Predominately White Institutions. The purpose of this paper is to notice the properties of a PWI and analyzes the relational context these properties create for its African-American undergraduates. This dissertation is formatted into two sections. The first section frames, examines, and theorizes the "racism effect" in higher education - the "ways in which race and racism explicitly and implicitly impact on the educational structures, processes, and discourses that affect people of color" (LatCrit Primer, 2000, p. xx). I maintain that African-Americans' experiences of marginalization and …

The Relationship Clinical Faculty Training Has To Student Teacher Self-Efficacy, Jennifer Leigh Maginnis
The Relationship Clinical Faculty Training Has To Student Teacher Self-Efficacy, Jennifer Leigh Maginnis
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
A southeastern American university school of education has implemented a clinical faculty program to which interested K-12 teachers apply, and if accepted are trained how to mentor student teachers. At the time of this study there were not enough clinical faculty for every student teacher; therefore, some student teachers were placed with (untrained) cooperating teachers for their clinical experience. This study compared the experience student teachers had with cooperating teachers versus with clinical faculty to begin to determine if the implementation of the clinical faculty training has an effect on student teacher self-efficacy.
The Effects Of Parental Influences On College Student Normative Perceptions Of Peer Alcohol Use, Emily Susanne Mowry Dobran
The Effects Of Parental Influences On College Student Normative Perceptions Of Peer Alcohol Use, Emily Susanne Mowry Dobran
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
There has been speculation as to how college students develop normative descriptive and injunctive perceptions of college student alcohol use. One possible explanation is that parents may be "carriers" of the skewed social norm, passing on their misperceptions of alcohol use to their children (Perkins, 2002).

Evidence Based Videoconferencing : Results Of A Series Of Quasiexperimental Replication Studies, Leigh Ann Mountain
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the impact of access to videoconferencing on student achievement, affect and behavioral measures. Student achievement was defined as students' scores on assessments, while affect was defined by students' responses to survey questions which measured student interest. Behavioral measures were defined as on-task and off-task behaviors students engaged in during the lesson. Prior knowledge and affect items were used as covariates during the analyses. The sample for this study included college, middle school, and elementary school level classes. Students who were part of the treatment group either had access to a videoconference …
The Influence Of Perceived Origins Of Learning Difficulties And Professional Role On The Acceptability Of The Iq-Achievement Discrepancy And Response-To-Intervention (Rti) Approaches To Learning Disability Classification, Matthew Amore Raso
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The present study assessed the acceptability of both the IQ-achievement discrepancy approach and the Response-to-Intervention (RTI) approach to LD classification among teachers, school psychologists, and school administrators. Relationships between each of these variables and perceived origins of learning difficulties among these professionals were also assessed. RTI received more favorable acceptability ratings when compared with the IQ-achievement approach, and more weight was attributed to instructional influences than either biological or environmental influences across all three groups, although significant between-group differences were noted. Biologically and instructionally-based explanations of learning difficulties were significant predictors of IQ-achievement acceptability, but in opposite directions. In contrast, …
